It is actually true for the PS3, but just as much for the Toshiba HD DVD division (that is my take on it, they won't release numbers, at least not for now). You do not sell next-gen products at these prices without an awful cost in profits.

The prices went down way too fast on the new gen players, and they are losing money hand over fist.
The thing is, Sony is making equally kick - butt products otherwise (but profitable) and is racking up in TVs and other general electronics areas.
In Q3 alone their profit is above $500M, even with PS3 loses included.
It is also to be noted that their film division is doing very good (despite, unfortunately, the counter- performance of Across the Universe).

Don't shoot the messenger.... but of course promotions and price cuts are gonna cut into the short-term bottom line.

Lets not forget. The old PS2 is still selling like hot cakes at $129 and it costs Sony very little $$$ to make these. 3rd party companies are still making games for the PS2 platform and thats more money for Sony.

Last year, Sony hit some hard times because of the Notebook battery recall.
