Default PS3 price cut pulls down Sony profits

Here is a link to a story regarding price cut in Japan for PS3 is cutting into Sony’s profits. Sony is going to introduce cost cutting technology while maintaining current performance in future Playstation 3. They plan on having a new version of the cell processor that is 40% smaller using a 65 nanometer production process. Sony is still on target to ship 6 million Playstation 3 by March. Retail price cuts of the Playstation 3 was hinted to occur in maybe two or three years. Most likely when advanced components allow a reduced size of overall parts we could see in 2 or 3 years Playstation 3 $100 cheaper then current prices.

P.S.

Since many people in Japan have BLU-RAY players the PLAYSTATION 3 is not as popular in Japan as the rest of the world. Since there is still a shortage of Sony PS3 in the US some people are selling the Japan version of Playstation in the US on EBAY.

Not sure what you are meaning here. The fact is that there are no standalone BD players available in japan.

What I think is that the market is more interested in recordable formats. The BD recorders, especially the Panasonic ones, are proving to be very popular despite their stratospheric prices. Whichever format has the largest capacity for the least money will win here. The playback of pre-recorded discs is secondary. This is why I think HD-DVD has no chance in japan 30GB < 50 GB; and the Toshiba Recorder is insanely expensive.

I dont think people in japan in general are buying PS3 solely as a BD player; but it is the only BD device available that is playback only. Once top games are released for PS3 I think you will see the numbers climb. At the moment there is not alot of the kinds of titles that are popular here.

Sony had a rather good quarter according to yesterdays PR that mentioned the things quoted in infoworld. No-one (ie sony, investors, japanese commentators ) seemed to be particularly concerned at the PS3 loss, its been viewed as nessecary part of establishing it in the market.

something like 600,000 ps3's have been sold through January since November in Japan, so that's pretty good (considering the production problems) and I'm sure it will only pick up from there (and that's nearly twice the number of xbox 360's sold there, which has been out for more than a year!).

and isn't blu-ray enjoying something like a 96% dominance in Japan over hd-dud?

This is good for Blu-ray. It was a sacrifice to help this awesome format. To help bring HighDef to everyone @ affordable prices. And the dumb Sony haters still whine - "they are arrogant"!

Better than being ignorant I say. Sony's done nothing to make me hate them.

they're not anti porn. they just made a decision not to use their replicators on it. all they need is a 3rd party replicator and porn will be fine.

it really is sad that sony is anti this or pro that when that really isn't the case. i always love the idea that sony is blu-ray when it really is a conglomerate of companies. oh well.

Default porn porn everywhere --

Well not everywhere, but there are announced hardcore titles from Vivid, so I guess they found their replicators.

But do we really want porn in hi-def?

This is perfect.

My friend is looking for a PS3 two years from now. Since I'm getting my PS3 this November/December, I'll spam it to death then after that, I'll sell it for half price.

Then I can buy this new unit (with 2nd gen Cell Processor).

This is good news.....as long as they don't release a slimline version of it.

Slimline versions are crap. The slimline PS2 overheated after four hours of play and it doesn't even have a fan. The slimline PS2 is as archaic as the original PS1.

The current form factor is already perfect so I hope that they don't release a botched-up slimline version.
