I don't if this is good news for HD-DVD fans or just a pathethic attempt to make some more sales, but I guess you all can decide for yourself. Again, if this was already posted I apologize.

exactly and cheap people who own cheap HDTV's will buy them all up.
There is nothing against people being frugal, I'm just saying that the targeted customer here will most likely own a VISZIO or similar unit that has either 720 or 1080i anyway so it's actually perfect for them. Anyway you cut it though its additional life support for them. And I'm not liking it. |

I'm wondering too BUT not looking forward to fight the crowd at 3am that day if there is a great deal on a BR player. I might have to though, depending on exactly how good the deal is.

I heard a rumor that Toshiba was planning on rolling out a new slogan to use during these latest give away sales. Something along the lines of "bringing an HD-DVD player to every trailer park across the nation."

The one thing that gets me. Will any 1st or 2nd tier manufacture ever join Toshiba now? Toshiba has hit the sweet spot of $199 and through subsidies. No profit to be seen. Even no-name brands like Venturer will not be able to obtain much of a profit margin. It's a really weird business model.
Even if Toshiba managed to bring the war to a draw, and both formats became the norm, to do so would require that HD-DVD adopters have only purchased Toshiba. What would the incentive be for a manufacture to license from HD-DVD except for a duel format player? If duel format became the standard, the number of blu-ray adopters would dominate, simply because of the PS3 factor, and the additional licensing fees to Sony would allow a very generous offer to the remaining exclusive studios. I just don't get what Toshiba is doing? It looks like they are subsidizing without any clear long term forecast. There is no chance with manufactures releasing an HD-DVD player, as it is unprofitable = no licensing. HD-DVD exclusive studios are said to receive production subsidies and pay no licensing for the format = no licensing money. If Toshiba is not making money off the players... where the hell are they going to get the money... DVD? HD-DVD is undercutting their DVD royalties? |

I would guess a lot of people with HDTV's can only get 720p/1080i, its still a great picture. My dad(63) just bought a Viszio 1080P, price is what sold him...what's wrong with that? I only make $50K a year, I know I'm always looking for the deals too. BTW - I would not let my dad buy a HD-DVD, told him it was already "dead" what does he know ! Just need a cheap BDplayer for the old guy |

They are giving it away and still can't find many takers. That should say something about their product.
This smacks of desperation on their part. Seems they are feeling the pressure of Q4 coming and know they are loosing badly. This is a last ditch effort to attract new customers before they wither on the vine. |

What I am saying is you can't lump HD DVD supporters into a catagory based on their TV set. There are a number of members here, and their friends, who run PS3's on SD TV. 360 supporters as well. |

This is really just a pathetic attempt to try to make better sales than Blu-ray. Its really sad to see that they are willing to loose this kind of money just to try to keep up with us. Think of it this way, we still have better sales, and are making more money from it. If HD-DVD has to give their stuff away, they are loosing money off this to make the numbers, its a lose-lose situation for HD-DVD. If they succeed in making better sales, 1 they can't keep those numbers up, 2 they are not going to be able to keep all these free give-aways going, 3 they are not making money from this so it is hurting them. If they fail, they lost all that money from the sales, they prove that no matter what they just can't beat Blu-ray.
I am sure the BDA is looking at this closely and is planning a strategic counter-strike to these cheap low-quality players. Why anyone would want one is beyond me, but I know a lot of people that just don't know any better. |

People will not mind paying less for a cheap 1080i hd-dvd player. It grabs the attention of people who are uncertain about the HD war and do not want to invest a lot of money. Also, with a price that cheap they can always upgrade to a 1080p player in a year or two.. maybe along with their tv. Will cheap ass hd-dvd players make a difference? Who knows but don't everyone act like it isn't good to let people on lower incomes get into hd.

I don't really get why everyone is so nervous about this. The average Wal-Mart customer has never even heard of HD-DVD. Blu-ray is a much more catchy name, and it has much more advertisements on sports shows (which is what the avg joe watches most) than hd-dvd does. That's just my opinion from what I've observed anyway. I really doubt a whole lot of people at Wal-mart will buy this player. Especially when they realize hd-dvd movies still cost like 30 bucks on average.
