Smile Dinosaur Blu-ray should belong to the "marvels of the world"

I just saw Dinosaur in Blu-ray yesterday evening and it's just amazing. I can't believe some people say it's old and prefer some bullcrap like Shrek or Ice age.
The image is the best, the characters are lively and moving, I hope many will have the chance to see it.

I have not seen this yet. I heard PQ is just stunning but is it a "for young audiences only" movie??? If so, I might not like it if the plot is tailored more for the kids.

I think adults (I'm 37 and in 2000, date of release when I first saw it, I was 30) may like this movie.
The main feelings (respect for the elderly ones, self sacrifice, giving a chance to outlanders ...), imo, can be understood better by adults than kids.
Of course the nice gentle lemurians will make ladies drool, I'm sure.

Well, he is the loooove monkey...

(Oh, some of us remember when they showed that silent opening trailer with Toy Story 2...
And then, when we first saw those ads where we found out the characters not only talked but talked Bad 90's-Disney Dialogue, we just wanted to go out and kill someone.)

I do think originally this was planned to be way different then it ended up being. There was to be no talking of the animals. I think it was supposed to be almost like a documentary, but then someone thought, no one is going to see this if there is no dialog...

My kids absolutely love this movie. Definitely "young audience" material...but fun for adults to sit through at least once Will pick it up on BD during the holiday sales frenzy.

Stan Winston is the one that originally came up with the idea for the movie -- but it was supposed to be stop motion. The dialogue was a VERY late addition to the movie. It had been scrapped and greenlit several times.

So, basically, how it came into being:
  • Eisner wants a CG studio to compete with Pixar -- he realizes that relations are on shaky ground. The Secret Lab is created.
  • People are hired for the Secret Lab. The only thing they're given is an egg. Nobody knows what to do with it.
  • In the meantime, Animal Kingdom is being created. Eisner wants a Dinosaur ride. He pushes for a dino movie.
  • Somebody remembers the Winston film. That project is resurrected again.
  • Innovative idea: CG dinos on live backgrounds.
  • Big loss: Chris Farley dies. Too late to change backgrounds now -- he's replaced with Joan Plowright and Dela Reese, thus some of the awkwardness of those characters (really, in what was supposed to be a heroic moment for Chris Farley, you just become afraid that somebody's going to break a hip!).
  • Strike 2: Walking with Dinosaurs is released. Does the same CG/live action blend as Dinosaur in less time at a far less budget.
  • Strike 3: Disney fans hate it, kids hate it, parents fall asleep. But, still make $100 million at the box office.

Basically, the movie had a LOT of things going against it. It really was a doomed project. And I didn't even mention the part where the government became involved due to the large amount of explosives purchased...

However, I still enjoyed it a lot (I enjoy some of the more recent films that a lot of Disney fans loathe). It does look great on Blu-Ray -- the movie looked great on DVD, so it's not that hard to look at least as good on Blu-Ray. Only MPG-2, I believe...

Really, in the end, the thing I didn't care about much is that it was too much of a Tarzan story and Disney released Tarzan around that time.

But, I'm a Dino freak. Love the animals -- I can't wait for Jurassic Park on Blu-Ray.

If you want a better idea of how it was supposed to be, read Raptor Red -- there's a good no-talking-animals dinosaur story.

Dinosaur is an Okay Movie and an Okay transfer. It is only slightly better looking than the DVD imo. But it is noticeable. The sound is fabulous!

That is the problem. I have been wanting to pick this up for awhile now. I always read really varied reviews. Some say only slightly better than DVD, others say incredible. Going to pick up and decide for myself.

the thing with this movie is that it is a SERIOUS animation...all of these pixar/dreamworks/fox animations these days are comedy oriented (EVERY ONE)...

Dinosaur is 100 percent serious...very good storyline, and it came before all the famous ones. but i already own the 2 disc collectors edition, and paid 23 bucks for it when it came out, no need to buy the blu version w/o extras...but if u donthave it or havent seen it PICK IT UP it is worth it

I liked this movie.
Most memorable thing about wasn't related directly to the movie persay.
This was the one disk that when released on DVD, would not play in my Toshiba DVD at the time.
It's what made me throw it out and get a Sony player.

Wow, I just got deja vu.

IIRC both Universal and Paramount are obligated to release Spielberg films on Blu-ray if they choose to release them on HD DVD.

Of course, the most interesting part of that is that Close Encounters is a Blu-ray exclusive being released with the full involvement of Mr. Spielberg.

Not quite accurate.

The Secret Lab was simply a rename of Dream Quest Images which Disney had recently purchased. You might remember them from films such as The Abyss, Total Recall, and Armageddon. Originally they started out as a high-quality low budget FX house for films like the V TV miniseries and the Nightmare on Elm Street series.

Disney wanted to make them their in house ILM since at the time they were using either them or ILM for the majority of their big films like Flubber, The Sixth Sense, Mighty Joe Young and Bicentennial Man.
Dinosaur's poor box office ended up making Disney scrap that investment and dissolve the studio...and go back to ILM and other large independent FX houses.

I'm very familiar with DQI -- I have a box of blank sericels that I found in a local warehouse that had tons of computers scrapped from Imagineering.

However, while Secret Lab was a bit of a renaming of DQI, it wasn't just that. When the Secret Lab was created, there was plenty of new hires, enough that it was basically a whole new studio. Sure, they had some veteran animators working with them, but there was a big hire of freshly-out-of-college animators hired to form the new studio. Wouldn't exactly call that a simple rename.

It is pretty much accurate of what I said though -- at the time, Pixar was only a deal for just a few movies and who knew if they'd break the partnership with that much success? Secret Lab was created for the purpose of being able to have something to replace Pixar if needed and for Disney to have something that they would have all profits from, not split profits. The same thing happened when all branches of Feature animation were shut down and replaced with the new CG version of feature animation -- but relations with Pixar at that point were even worse than ever (that is around the time that Roy Disney started his war against Eisner and Steve Jobs had a few things of his own to publicly say).

Another movie was planned for the Secret Lab, but Roy E. Disney wanted it shut down for being too gay. So, it was eventually scrapped.

Secret Lab didn't end there -- they went back to the DQI roots. They halted production after Kangaroo Jack was completed.

I realize this is probably old news, and have been talked about already. But I rented Dinosaur, and I didn't think it was going to be anything spectacular. I was wrong. The PQ on this movie is simply incredible. I was completely impressed. Seemed like the movie was made solely for the purpose of it being on blu. If you haven't seen it, it is definitely worth a rental, and I think I am going to buy it
