Honoring the original splendor of the film, the Blu-ray release boasts the finest and most vivid home entertainment presentation to date. Cinematographer Robert Surtees (Ben-Hur, The Last Picture Show, The Sting, The Graduate) filmed Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) in stunning 65mm Panavision, the first motion picture so credited, yielding an ultra-wide projected aspect ratio. The result earned Surtees a Best Cinematography Oscar® nomination for his work (1963). HMS Bounty sets out on a journey through perilous seas to a tropical paradise…and into history as the one of the most ill-fated vessels in naval lore. Lewis Milestone (All Quiet on the Western Front) directs this color-drenched spectacular nominated for seven Academy Awards®, including Best Picture. Filmed before in 1935 and again in 1984’s The Bounty, the gripping story centers on first officer Fletcher Christian (Marlon Brando), a dandy transformed into a man of action, and Capt. William Bligh (Trevor Howard), uncompromising in his command or his cruelty. “Fear is [my] best weapon,” Bligh proclaims. But it’s also the most costly, driving men to desperation and mutiny. Richard Harris, Hugh Griffith and Richard Haydn also star in this epic adventure. Didn't care for Brando's version. I much prefer the original with Laughton and Gable, but have not purchased due to the high price tag. I also enjoyed The Bounty and will consider adding it to my collection whenever it hits blu.

Also I suspect the reason they waited with those two titles is to take advantage of a greater installed base of BD players. I wouldn't be surprised if those HD-DVDs sold in the hundreds. Last edited by Strevlac; 07-11-2011 at 08:58 PM. |

And I just realized that Nov. is close enough to 2012 that they can promote it as a 50th Anniversary edition, and that may have been a factor in waiting to release it on Blu-ray. |

I have been waiting for this since HD-DVD released its version. This is by far my favorite version of this story and one of my favorite movies. To see this on Blu-ray will be wonderful. I was close to getting an HD-DVD player for cheap just for this and a few others, and Warner switched sides and announced that they would release all of their HD-DVDs soon. While it wasn't soon, and I never got that player, I am glad to be getting this. By the end of the year there will be many of the classics released. I put this up there with Lawrence of Arabia.

The DVD looks great, the Blu-ray should look fantastic. I bet the Tahiti scenes will look almost 3D. It would be great if the alternate (original) front & end scenes could be chosen with seemless branching, but it doesn't sound like it. As I remember, on the DVD those scenes had the wrong run hight. It's films like this where Blu-ray really shines.
