Default 2020 A Year in Review - Best/Most Important Blu-ray releases

With the year practically over, I wanted to see what others thought were the most important/best Blu-ray releases of the year? I'll share my thoughts, but would really like to hear from others.

1. Graveyards of Honor (Arrow Video)

Two of the most gut punching gangster films ever made in one package. The films are presented in the best quality they have ever looked in a solid limited edition packaging and thorough booklet. These are difficult films to watch due to the content, but essential to any gangster film fans. Easily tops the list for myself.

2. The Irishman (Criterion Collection)

Criterion nails this release in more ways than one, and provides a transfer that provides a more film like experience than the Netflix stream. More than likely Scorsese's final gangster film, that bring his career full circle. A very well made package.

3. Hiroshima (Arrow Academy)

A film that escaped the attention of many film fans is finally released by Arrow in another solid package.

This was a brutal and hard watch. Hundreds of bodies, the living have now become the living dead, and the assortment of maladies is never ending. I never imagined a film going to the point where we see a woman covered in burns giving birth. The film holds no punches to the impacts the bomb had on children as well. The movie is 104 minutes, but once we jump to the dropping of the bomb it flew by due to its shocking nature.

I honestly would say this is truly essential viewing, and a travesty that this film doesn't have the recognition it deserves. I'm truly grateful once again to Arrow for releasing this. I must warn you, this is no easy watch, but again, I would say as film fans here, you should check it out. I hope this films gets a wider audience due to this release, because it deserves it.

4. Come and See (Criterion Collection)

While the complaints of Criterion not going UHD seeming to have dominated any Criterion conversation, 2020 was one of the best years in terms of the quality of films releases from the company, and Come and See is a testament to that fact.

This is another gut wrenching experience of a film that leaves you feeling uneasy when it's over. War is hell as the saying goes, and this one film that truly encapsulates that motto. The Criterion release looks fantastic as is expected from the company.

5. The Stalking Moon (Warner Archies Collection)

WAC and 2020 seem to have had an arrangement to release an assortment of more light hearted fare, but The Stalking Moon is one notable exception.

A western like no other, where death is a matter of fact, and no one is truly safe. WAC restoration of the film is breathtaking. While no special features of merit are presented here, the fact that this film received a release is important enough.

6. Survivor Ballads: Three Films by Shohei Imamura (Arrow Academy)

Three Japanese films from the 1980's with two of them being the most important Japanese films of the era. Arrow's release is meticulous in its presentation and content. Includes a well written and informative piece by Tom Mes that really goes into the mythos of Shohei Imamura.

Films fans are in for a treat with Ballad of Narayama and especially Black Rain which might be one of the most important Japanese films ever made. Black Rain will leave you contemplating your life and to not take advantage of a single day that you're still alive. That feeling may fade over a few days, but the movie never really evaporates from the recess of your mind.

7.

Uncut Gems (Lionsgate)

My personal favorite film of 2019 and one of my favorite releases of the year. It's only 7 on the list due to not having an assortment of special features.

However, the Lionsgate release features exceptional sound and picture for a film that those with high levels of anxiety should avoid. This is a film that moves quick and give you little time to breath. Once you're out of breath it hits you over the head and knocks you the floor and it never lets up after this point. Adam Sandlers finest performance is preserved for our lifetimes (unless disc rot gets it first) with his solid release.

8. Friday The 13th: Collection (Scream Factory)

Despite discs with a few "issues" this was one of the most impressive sets released on Blu-ray. Ever. Assembled into the middle of a pandemic was no easy feat, especially considering the amount of features that make into on this set.

The films have never looked as impressive as they do in the set, which include the original poster art of the films on the disc sleeves. There is not much I can add to what has been already said about these films, but as a Jason fan growing up, I felt fully satisfied.

9. The Hit (Criterion Collection)

While not a huge jump from the DVD release, it does provide an upgrade for fans of the film.

Long missing in the US on Blu-ray, that was finally rectified in 2020 thanks to Criterion. A complex and contemplative gangster films that is pushed beyond a typical gangster films thanks to direction of Stephen Fears and the performances of John Hurt and Terence Stamp.

A solid release that should be part of any gangster film fans collection.

10. Wicked City (Discotek Media)

You can never be sure what films may make the cut to Blu-ray, thanks to Discotek, Wicked City finally has a US release.

The film has never looked as good as it does here, and every drop of blood and sweat is fully preserved in a glorious encode. An anime film that is not accessible for everyone due to its nature and content, but it is a film that is well made and keeps you glued to your seat for its running time. Once again, an exceptional release.

Notable mentions:

Zebraman (Media Blasters)
Gemini (Mondo Macabre)
Attack! (Kino Lorber)
Ghost Dog (Criterion)
The Untold Story (Unearthed Films)
Brute Force (Criterion)
Gamera (Arrow)
Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man (Raro)
Solid Metal Nightmares (Arrow)
The Great Escape (Criterion)
The Wizard (Shout Factory)
Tremors (Arrow)

Most Important Releases:

[Show spoiler]

Every time a new Altman film hits BD, it's a cause for celebration.

Every time a new Anthony Mann film hits BD, it's a cause for celebration.

A treasure trove for anyone who loves movies and home video tech. The hardcover book featuring detailed restoration and transfer notes is a fantastic addition I hope Sony will continue to include in future volumes.

Speaking as someone who has seen this movie countless times, this 4K edition is a revelation. It's a completely different visual experience.

Though the vinyl-sized packaging is awkward AF, I'm thrilled to finally have I vitelloni, Juliet of the Spirits, and Intervista on BD. And, of course, it's great to have all of these wonderful films collected in one release. Now someone needs to release Ginger & Fred ASAP!

Regardless of how one feels about the movie (I happen to really like it), any UHD release that features HFR is cutting-edge, must-own tech as far as I'm concerned.

Two masterpieces, finally on BD. If you haven't seen these before, you're in for a treat.

One of the greatest westerns ever made. Hopefully many more people will discover it thanks to this Criterion release.

I'm counting this under "most important" because it's Arrow's first foray into the UHD arena. And this is one hell of a way to make an entrance, as it has probably the best home video transfer I've ever seen. Like, ever. For any movie.

One of my favorite films of all time. It took way too long for this to find its way to Blu-ray.

Favorite Discoveries:

[Show spoiler]

A Paul Schrader film I had never seen, and I found it fascinating, riveting, hypnotic. A cerebral, elliptical drama that's more tense and unnerving than most thrillers. Walken is terrifying.

Though billed as a light, fun Christmas adventure, I was shocked to instead find something very dark, and often even disturbing; this is closer to Something Wicked This Way Comes than Home Alone. And, of course, Vinegar Syndrome's 4K transfer couldn't be more beautiful.

It seems like everyone hates this movie, but I thought it was an absolute blast. A bunch of psychotic bikers yelling and beating people (including each other) up for 90 minutes, with zero budget in sight. Hilarious, wild, absurd, and ridiculous - I couldn't have had more fun.

What a gem this is! I blind-bought this after reading the DVD Beaver review and I'm so glad I did. A powerful and assured debut from Isabella Eklof; I can't wait to see what she does next.

A masterpiece from Von Trier. Both movingly profound and profoundly hilarious. A film I will revisit many times in the future.

Kirk Douglas, Yul Brynner, Jules Verne, a desolate island, pirates, and shockingly brutal violence. This was cinematic heaven for me.

A raw, heartbreaking pre-war German drama that deals with queer themes in moving and surprising ways.

I had no interest in this movie when it was announced. An '80s BMX movie? What's gonna be appealing about that? But, boy, am I glad I gave it a shot, because I found it so infectiously earnest and good-natured that it completely won me over.

Other Favorite Releases:

[Show spoiler]

One of my longest-awaited BD upgrades. I've always loved this movie.

One of the most beautiful transfers on the market.

A gorgeous package (with hilariously appropriate artwork) for a bizarre, funny, audacious movie that I've grown to love.

Happy to be able to retire my Criterion DVD.

An STUNNING UHD transfer means I am more certain than ever that this film will be a part of my annual October viewing.

What is there to say? One of the greatest movies ever made, and it looks gorgeous.

Another movie I love finally gets an (English and region A-friendly) HD release.

My favorite Bresson film. Glad Criterion chose this one for a BD upgrade.

This movie is underrated as hell. I've loved it since I first saw it years ago, and I never expected anyone to release it on BD.

Another personal favorite gets the HD upgrade at last. (Can you tell this was a big year for me and long-awaited BD upgrades?)

One of my favorite bands giving the performance of a lifetime. So glad they released this on BD.

A sleeper gem with one of the most devastating endings I've ever seen. So happy its finally on BD.

So many great titles in there. The Light at the Edge of the World was a favorite. Rad also seems to be one a lot of people liked, and I'm currently waiting for mine to come in, so I'll finally be able to see this one. Same with No Way Home.

Dawn of the Dead seems like it might be the best release of the year, but that's another one I need to get.

Either way, excellent list.

As I said in a similar thread, I didn't buy a lot of discs last year to answer these best of lists with any credibility. So I can't say "best", I can only say what I was impressed with...

1917 is probably my disc of the year, but I don't own enough discs to say that, will also recommend Spartacus...and because I picked up a whole bunch of Spielberg titles in 4K this year, gotta tip the hat to the guy...Jaws, Close Encounters, E.T., Hook, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Ready Player One, War of the Worlds...Fantastic. All of them. Bring on Empire of the Sun, Steven.

For my money, it had to be the 4K Midsommar Directors Cut. The packaging is amazingly detailed and looks completely awesome. I wish it had more in terms of features, but I love it.

These are the ones that made my heart go pitter pat this year when announced. All were essential Day Ones.

Gotta give you a shout out Duke. I truly enjoyed this release and it was one of my favorites as well. Being a blind buy, however, it's reserved for my favorite surprises list. Maybe we need one of those threads...

A bit late since I already made my post, but just wanted to add No Way Home was a fantastic release. Never seen the film, but Severin did a great job with the PQ for a movie that I'm sure has flown under the radar for many. One of Tim Roth's best performance for a pretty entertaining film. I'd highly suggest checking it out.

I'm waiting on the standard edition for the Second Sight "Dawn of the Dead" set, but here were the releases I was the most excited to get and/or enjoyed the most this year. I would put "Tales from the Darkside" on here - and it was a good release - but upon rewatching it, it really didn't hold up for me. I'm hoping "April Fool's Day" fares better, since I haven't seen that one in fifteen years or so either. Regardless, glad they're both finally out on blu!

Without further ado...

2020 was a great year for releases I never thought I'd see and new discoveries. Here's hoping 2021 brings even more spiffed-up favorites and more great stuff I've never heard of... and hopefully it's also the year I upgrade my TV to 4k and get a UHD player. :^)
