I would definitely say that in the past couple decades, actors and actresses have been getting prettier, like they're hired for the looks first and acting talent second, or not at all. Does this bother you?
Take for example the Superman and Star Wars franchises. In the upcoming Superman movie, we have Amy Adams as Lois Lane. In the original, Margot Kidder... To be fair Amy Adams has a lot of class, imo, but if you're judging just based on looks, Kidder looks like quite homely. In the PT Star Wars Trilogy we have Natalie Portman. In the OT, Carrie Fischer, and yes she looks fine in Return of the Jedi but she tried pretty hard, so did Kidder, to look that good. Not that I'm devaluing them, but I don't think those woman would've got the roles today. Today we have actors like Hayden Christensen, Kristen Stewart, and the like, and that is the downside of picking pretty actors. Sure it's possible to find someone both ridiculously good looking and ridiculously talented, but it's very shallow and I guess I'm a bit tired of it. On the other hand, if director's started picking average looking actors for their movies, I don't think the public would react well. Do you? |

I don't have a problem with the franchise movies you've listed as examples. But High School movies are the worst. I like how the original Degrassi, and the earlier Degrassi Next Generation TV series were cast. With kids who actually looked like...normal kids. Not like the CW that has every character dressed like they came from a Abercrombie and Finch catalog photo shoot.

Your argument loses credibility when you list Hayden Christensen and especially Kristen Stewart as pretty.
![]() I don't think the casting of people strictly for looks is any more prevalent than it ever was. You can cherry pick examples from any era. I could name you plenty of people/films from any decade where they cast an attractive person whose acting was less than stellar. I could also probably list plenty of modern actors who are average -to-unattractive that get cast in lead roles. Last edited by cinemaphile; 04-29-2013 at 03:33 AM. |

I don't see how this is a new development. Movies from the 30s, 40s, 50s, and so on, have beautiful women and handsome men all over the place. Probably before that, too, but my knowledge of silent cinema is hazy.
It doesn't bother me any more than other types of miscasting bother me. I must confess that if you remove all the other variables, I'd rather spend my two hours watching a good-looking actress rather than some frump, but obviously it depends on the role. |

Nah it doesn't bother me really. Movies have always featured what is considered beautiful women or handsome men. It will always be that way. Granted, nowadays everyone looks too perfect in movies or some TV shows.
I wouldn't go to the theater to see ugly people. That's what walmart shopping trips are for lol |

Watch something like Casablanca and think about how ridiculous it would've been for people on the run to have all the nice clothes that the characters wear and for Ingrid Bergman to be glowing all the time. ![]() |

1st off: dont make generalizations, not all directors cast their films.
2) i think Kidder was more attractive than Amy Adams 3) Film has always had great looking actors & actresses: ![]() ![]() Last edited by Abdrewes; 04-29-2013 at 04:24 AM. |

Overall, it doesn't bother me to have pretty people in movies. If they do a serviceable job, fine. Being easy on the eyes is a bonus. Now if it's completely out of place, then I have a problem. |

Adams and Portman both have acting chops over Kidder and Fisher in addition to the looks so that's a weak comparison. I also just think you could throw a rock in any direction and hit a "pretty" person nowadays.
If it really bothers you at least you have Christopher Nolan who hardly ever has an attractive leading lady with the exception of Marion Cotillard. ![]() |

Scarlett Johansson Katie Holmes I'd even say Carrie-Anne Moss, who may not be as hot as she used to be but was quite attractive back when she did Memento. |

As fickle as this might sound, Pretty people sell movies! Those good looking people sometimes get someone to see something they normally wouldn't see, but since it has a good looking person they will. Like I said, I know it sounds fickle, but it's the truth. But most of those actors still have skills.
I know some might think that's a stupid or lame argument, but it's true. But hey, people I guess they need something else to whine about. ![]() |
