Default I need help with new system

I have been out of the loop for quite a while. I have recently moved into a new place and need to rebuild a media room. Outside of the tv I have o idea where to start.

What I used to have was an onkyo 605 powering 2 monitor 60s a cs2, similar to monitor 50's in the back, and 2 powered 12" subs.

The system sounded pretty good for it all being pieced together.

My new room is still about the same size but hard surfaced and the seating area will be closer (about 7/8' from the tv) and the overall size of the room is about 12x16 ish.

I would like to have a receiver that is expandable with pre-outs at this time I only intend on running 5.2 and bi-amping my front end, in the past 7 channel didnt seem to that big of an improvement however that was about 7 years ago and my old room was not very good for 7 channels.

I would like to build a system upgraded from what i had but my spending limit would be in the ballpark of $1500 (just on the ht gear)

This room isnt that big so it will not require anything massive and I will have dampen the room with some throw rugs and maybe some wall coverings.

Im just at a loss on what to get. I get settled on something then read reviews of a reciever that should be good but has network problems or firmware issues.

Any ideas?

Hmmm... The Onkyo 1010 showed $800 for me when I looked it up, is that what you found? I did a 15-second price check on Amazon and it looks like you are staring down almost 2 grand just for a 3.1 setup. I'm sure you could probably find that gear cheaper somewhere else, but not THAT much cheaper.

Are you married to the idea of the Onkyo 1010? I don't know what your personal tastes are in receivers, or how far into the future you want it to last you. Are you wanting a 5.1 setup for $1,500 and that will be that? Or are you looking for a starting point in that budget for future expansion and upgrades down the road?

Once I know the answers to those questions I'll certainly be able to offer my 2 cents on equipment. I hope I can be of help!

Nope Im not stuck on any particular piece of gear. My place is a condo which I will probably not live in forever and even know its a dedicated media room its a very tough room to be proper.

Im open to pretty much anything preferring at least 5.1/.2 dedicated to movies and games, not much cd/mp3 playback. I would like to have the option for 4k, which over the next 2 years will become reasonable.

my main goal is to have plenty of clean power and punch and a kickass sub that wont fart and fold.

Sounds good, I'll do some browsing and see what I come up with in that range.

This is brand new from Denon that might be what you are looking for. It has Audyssey XT32, Sub EQ HT (will EQ two subs independently) 4k and preouts.

Alright I checked a couple of prices on my lunch break today and here is what I would recommend to make the most of your budget and meet your criteria.

http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/value2pkg.html
Hsu Research package deal to get their good sounding bookshelves and center channel with the STF-2 subwoofer, which is a fantastic budget sub. The output from the bookshelves should be plenty for a small room in a condo where you won't want to disturb neighbors anyway. The 5.1 system will cost you $1,049.

And then drive them with this:

http://www.gosale.com/5804735/yamaha...Fcc-MgodHSEAfw

That's a great receiver with plenty of features for a bargain of a price. I own a less expensive Yamaha and I can attest to their quality. The receiver will set you back $515 or so. I found some refurb or open-box examples for that price so as long as you don't care about it being sealed in the box you can get a great deal.

Total cost: $1,564

That system will give you:
  • 5.1 channel audio with future expansion up to 7.2
  • Pre-outs for bigger, more power hungry speakers in the future
  • Clean, solid bass down to 25 Hz
  • 4k video passthrough
  • Good quality speakers that can be driven without external amplification

That's what I got for you, hope it helps.

I wished I could check out the way those "small" speakers sound. I like the 15" kit even know its above my budget. I suppose 1 12" on center at about 8' away would be plenty in a hard surfaced room.

I think I will go with it and move my st60 in that room and wait for the zt60 to drop in price and reassess in the 4th quarter.

Anyone currently using hsu?
