yes, with plasmas it can result in burn in and with lcds it will cause colors to not be as vibrant in the long term.

If you leave the image paused. Regular viewing will eventually degrade the display evenly, just as it did with CRT's. Burn in only occurs with a still image, and for permanent burn-in to occur it takes many hours.

It depends one what you consider to long.Best Buy and Circuit City leave there displays on from 9am till 10pm with no damage occurring on Plasma or LCD.
If you leave imaged paused for great lengths Burn-in can occur on Plasma...
believe it or not LCD as well but it takes a little longer.

the pannys (panasonic) do not burn in anymore! unless u r stupid to let ur plasma run on the same exact picture for more than 15 hours i still think the panny wont but havent tried for more than 12 hours.

hehe I own that panny and still get image retention at times but no harm done.
Plasma phosphors does get beat up if image is paused for great lengths of time...Panasonic ,Pioneer ,Samsung have added great features to combat burn-in/Screen retention from occurring as often. If for some reason burn in did appear you would run moving images for an hour and burn in would be gone.
