Default House on Haunted Hill (1959)

So now that the majority of the contents of the old Shout/Scream Vincent Price Collections have been re-released in one form or another--what the heck is holding up the original House on Haunted Hill? I can't be the only one wishing it makes a reappearance somewhere soon, either in the US or abroad.

It is a public domain title with Warner having the only decent elements.

And being an Allied Artists film, Warner is the "official" owner.

A user on The Bat (1959) special edition details news post commented that they heard rumors that The Film Detective label was going to be releasing this on blu-ray. They never commented again about it and since they only allow PMs from friends, I don't know where or who they heard it from to get more info about it.

I just watched it again tonight and its almost agonizing how its exclusive to the OOP collection still. Even though I'd love to get my hands on the OOP collection (to go in-between collections I and III, and to obviously have this and Return of the Fly, another Price film exclusive to collections only), I'd still give anything to own this on its own.

That should be good news ? Maybe a Warner Archive release soon. They finally did Mark of the vampire . Hopefully HOHH is coming . return of the fly would be nice too.

Especially since like HoHH, its only available in collections (the Vincent Price Collection II and The Fly Collection, both from Shout!/Scream Factory.)

Return of the Fly is from Fox, and therefore with Disney now. I am surprised Shout hasn't re-licensed or re-released House on Haunted Hill by itself.

The Fly Collection is also still readily available, so I wouldn't wait on grabbing that one (for Return of the Fly) while it's still around.

I only really want the first two films with Price (maybe the third but I have yet to see it.) I have no interest in the 80s films, so it'd feel like its not worth getting the collection if I'm not going to watch all of them. I don't know if I should hold out on it eventually getting its own release or if I should buy it off eBay, since some people are selling the film separate from the collection. I'm surprised Fox never released the sequel on its own, since they released the first one by itself.

If you don't mind pre-owned, there e a couple listings selling the ones you want individually, or grouped without the 80's films

Thanks for the link. It looks like new listings have been added since I last looked on there.

If you can get a hold of the Vincent Price Collection II, the House on Haunted Hill disc is very nice. I watched it a week ago and was blown away by how good it looked and sounded. I'm not sure it's from the negative, but it's definitely no more than one generation removed (maybe a fine grain master positive?). Hopefully Scream Factory can reissue the disc on its own (or at least find a way to get that set back in print).

HOHH may be public domain, but the only releases worth getting will be the ones "officially" licensed from Warner; they have the original elements. Maybe WAC will release it themselves.

I've searched up and down the internet for the second collection and its always $100+ everywhere I look (even pre-owned or damaged.) I think Kino still has the rights since the films from the set are still being sold by them, and who knows how long they'll have the rights (I guess unless you ask and hopefully get an answer?) I want it so badly, but I think it'd the most expensive OOP purchase I'd ever make if I were to get it.

The caps on here do look great for HoHH. After seeing the review, I hate having to watch the film on streaming since I know it doesn't look and sound as good as the blu-ray. It'd be great if the WAC would release it on its own for sure. You'd think that a film thats considered a Halloween staple would have its own release by now.

Some of the films in the set have been re-licensed to Kino, but I doubt they have HOHH since Kino has yet to do a deal with Warner. There’s little stopping Shout from re-licensing the film and reissuing it on its own or for WAC to do their own edition, so either one is a possibility.

Quintessential example of a movie being too compromised by its ending.
[Show spoiler]It ceases being a horror classic when it's revealed to be one giant hoax. Disappointing.

Nah, it's still a lot of fun and, yes, a horror classic.

I'm on the controversial side of thinking the remake is better

The movie is in the public domain, any distributor with access to the elements can do a release. Warner has the best elements available but just because they have them, does not mean they have to share them.
