Default The war, before, during, after...

Once upon a time, a few short years ago, we were ALL supporters of DVD. It was the best way to watch movies at home and it was pretty good. Then, HD TV's start coming out and coming down in price and the features get better. These TV's get up to 1080p and now, standard content on an HD TV is not that hot. So, DVD players start getting capabilities to upconvert the signal and these new HIGH DEF players and movies come out (Blu-ray and HD DVD). Now, those that decide to take the plunge (we early adopters) are split into two groups. It's kind of like The Capulets and Montagues. Although we all strive for the same end result: higher quality movies that take advantage of our new HD TV's, the mud slinging and FUD has gotten the best of some. I'm not saying we're "enemies" per se, but we're sure on different pages, and stubborn about it.

And, you know, it's sad that one side will probably lose. There are theories that they could co-exist, but we all know that's not the most intelligent solution. Speaking of intelligence, anyone who can read and do research online should come to the logical conclusion that Blu-ray will win this war. I myself, am currently deciding on my second Blu-ray player: 40gb PS3 or the new Panny DMP-BD30 (opinions welcome btw). I won't get into all the reasons Blu-ray is better (preaching to the choir here) but you get my point. There are those HD DVD fanboys that are so dedicated to their cause that they hate Blu-ray and, dare I say, us for supporting it, to a certain degree.

Once the dust settles and the winner emerges, what do we do? Shall we gloat and say "I told you so"? Should we feel sorry for the losing side (all that money they wasted supporting the inferior product)? And what will THEY do? Once their anger subsides, they will ultimately buy a Blu-ray player and movies. Ask them right now and they'll say "Oh No... never" but how can they not? I mean, once again, the goal is to watch High Def content and if they don't submit to the "good side of the force" they will have to settle for SD content (yuck).

In the end "there can be only one" and hopefully we can all get along again.

In the interim, perhaps I should start printing T-shirts out that say "former hd dvd supporter" ...

And to you few dual-format supporters, no disrespect because I understand your hunger for HD content, but I think most will agree, the future is Blu. Again, I imagine at some point we will ALL be watching our Blu-ray movies and the "war" will be long over. And, we'll all live happily ever after.

I'll forgive them for their transgressions and welcome them into the family that is Blu.

Default But just like BetaMAx

you're always going to hear every now and again "you see this is why we chose HD DUD first. 'Cause you didn't have this problem or that problem". It will be annoying for a while.

Pretty darned funny. But seriously, I think they will all adopt blu, but as I've said on another post, I think there will be those that will hold out for some time thinking they can somehow revive the DUD format. I will be one of us that will be here to welcome them with open arms, without ridicule, and offering any help I can in helping them with their transfusion from red to blu...

And that is one of the things that sets Blu-ray.com apart from so many other sites. We really ARE the "Good guys". There are a lot of GREAT people here. In the words (and voice) of Eric Cartman: I love you guys.

You're assuming they will go Blu, if did fails. I think the unreasoned hatred those clowns have for Sony will drive them to VMD, then downloads.

I would say maybe a few extremists would go that way but when your main argument is price point and content, they would turn blu and hide the fact that they were ever red. If they were true HD movie enthusiasts, going VMD and download would not really provide them the HD experience.

Well, except for those who were supporting DiVX...
Granted, few actual users were supporting DiVX, except for those gullible enough to believe it was the only thrill of seeing movies on disk out there, those who believed in some promise of "It's so easier than renting", those who thought there'd be some new online-content gimmick coming, or clueless studios who thought we just wanted to watch action movies.
