How is PS3 upconversion vs Oppo 981HD? - Blu-ray Forum

Has anyone tried a 1080p upconversion comparison for both the PS3 and Oppo players? I already have the PS3, but I'm wondering if the Oppo still has a better picture quality for SD DVDs...

There's no way of knowing for sure, since Secrets hasn't tested firmware 1.8+ on the PS3 yet. They're about the only people I trust to get it right.

I've owned the Oppo, a Sony upconverting DVD player and PS3 and I think all 3 are close. (can't tell difference to naked eye)... The beautiful thing about PS3 though is that Sony is devoted to making it better through firmware so if new methods are discovered to make upconverting better, they can implement it. I'd stick with the PS3. If the Oppo is better, I really couldn't tell by looking at it. Plus, if you DON'T buy the Oppo, that's a couple hundred bucks you can spend on Blu-ray movies!

Things are done and perform best for what they were built for...

I have a Samsung HD841 upconverter SD to even 1080i yes... and the things included inside definitely do a better job upconverting SD to almost a 720p HD (looks like it) with better details. The PS3 was made for Blu-ray and games and even do they look beautiful certainly for sure not quite as a made for to upconvert SD-DVD. In fact the PS3 does DVD's to have the "ONE" console in which you can have it all in it.

yes you can do firmware upgrades to better things around, but it does not bring the special hardware to upconvert, its just a player. In Fact the Sony highest BD priced standalone player (dont remember the model) has even greater Picture Quality than the PS3 (something about more MHZ, like 10 or 12 bit DAC, and a very good sampler) which they all equal in faster transfer and better details (thats why its so high priced)

I have the PS3 to my Samsung TV's HDMI input and the HD841 SD to the other HDMI input (DVI to HDMI cable) ive done comparisons between them with the same original movie and definitely the PS3 doesnt look as good as the regular upconverter....

My thoughts and opinion shared for you
