Default ps3 4:3 dvd upconversion

Will ps3 properly upconvert 4:3 aspect ratio DVDs? (i.e. keep them in the 4:3 aspect ratio?) My current bd-player stretches them to a 16:9 aspect ratio (if I don't upconvert and let the TV upscale, then it's fine).

My 1200 has this issue.
I just change the aspect ratio on my TV to 4:3 compensate.
It's still a workaround and I believe the player should be smart enough to figure this out without making adjustments between widescreen and 4:3 aspect ratio movies.

Not sure if the PS3 knows to auto adjust the aspect ratio for 4:3 and not stretch but the Panasonic BD30 does just fine.

For my Philips BDP9000, no matter what settings I choose (incl. TV) it will stretch when upconverting (except on the 480p setting). This was an issue identified early by some users and we hoped for a firmware update to solve it but it never came.

TY all for the info on the PS3. I have my PS3 already and am now just waiting form my new receiver and spkrs to come I probably won't get a single game for it until Final Fantasy comes out.

The PS3 can upconvert the video without stretching it. I have my upscaling settings set to normal. I watch old anime on my PS3 all the time with no problem.

Yep, just make sure the upscaling setting is normal...I watch Futurama and the Simpsons all the time.

That's not working for me. I have upscaling set to normal. I have component set and 1080i as my output setting and yet for all my 4:3 DVDs, they are stretched. Anyone have any ideas?

4:3 dvds should have black bars on the sides if you set the PS3 to normal upscaling so if its taking every inch of your screen it maybe anamorphic widescreen

They are 4:3 content. As in TV shows. They are not widescreen. Thus they are not anamorphic. They are being stretched despite the upconversion being set to Normal.

Can anyone help? If I cannot get this solved, I will be returning the PS3 to the store and getting a regular BR player.

turn upscaling to OFF if you want 4:3. if you want it upconverted, put it to normal and try your tv setting to 4:3 to keep it small. not sure why you really wanna do that but to each their own. let me know if any of that worked.

It's the PS3 because the $80 Sony DVD player I had did this just fine. The Comcast HD DVR does it just fine. It's the PS3. I am not going to sit here and switch this stuff back and forth every time I go between 4:3 content and widescreen content. If the PS3 is not capable of this then it is going back.

Some people dislike stretched images. Is that so hard to grasp?

when i had a PS2 and a 4:3 tv it would vertically stretch the picture on dvds, no matter what settings i had.

when i got a PS3 i got it before replacing the tv and it didnt have this problem, and you could even see the upscaling in action on my no HD ready tv..

the ps3 is very clever. that is all.

You can have both. Personally, I hate distorting an image just to fill the entire screen. I've also watched 4:3 aspect TV shows and movies thru my PS3 upconverted without it being stretched.
