The PS3 can upconvert the video without stretching it. I have my upscaling settings set to normal. I watch old anime on my PS3 all the time with no problem.

Yep, just make sure the upscaling setting is normal...I watch Futurama and the Simpsons all the time.

That's not working for me. I have upscaling set to normal. I have component set and 1080i as my output setting and yet for all my 4:3 DVDs, they are stretched. Anyone have any ideas?

4:3 dvds should have black bars on the sides if you set the PS3 to normal upscaling so if its taking every inch of your screen it maybe anamorphic widescreen

They are 4:3 content. As in TV shows. They are not widescreen. Thus they are not anamorphic. They are being stretched despite the upconversion being set to Normal.

Can anyone help? If I cannot get this solved, I will be returning the PS3 to the store and getting a regular BR player.

The PS3 will not upscale content over an analog component output if the DVD uses Macrovision copy protection (and basically all pressed DVDs uses that), so the PS3 is most likely sending out 480i/p or equivalent, and your TV will then do whatever it does with this signal.

Bingo. Any official documentation from SONY says you should use HDMI for upscaling as well as 1080p Blu-ray playback.

Also, double check your TV's settings as this may be a limitation of your TV. Some TV's don't have a setting to leave the the aspect ratio untouched. Sometimes they just have a 16:9 mode and a 4:3 mode so depending on what you are watching, you'd have to switch between them. Whereas having a mode that doesn't touch the aspect ratio would leave everything in its original form, so you'd only have to switch specifically for stretching 4:3 to fit a widescreen, or to stretch Animorphic widescreen so that it looks correct.
