Default Western Digital My Book Pro Edition II - Door Stop

Well, I got my WD My Book Pro Edition II in today. 1 TB of glorious storage for my photos, music and whatever else. I hook it up and all is well. I see it, it works I can write to it and blah blah blah.

I decided to update the firmware to get the latest and greatest improvements. Oh BOY! Was that a mistake! I now have a DEAD 1 TB storage device. 340+ bux out the window. The firmware update failed midway and after that it pissed out and will no longer do anything. The inner ring stays lit and it detects it as some odd usb device.

Come to find out - this is a HUGE problem with these and the firmware. I am not sure why WD is putting things like this out. I have never had a problem with them but now I am kinda upset. I really wanted to use this thing, now its trashed.

Looks like I get to return this and get another one and waste time waiting for all of it to happen. Lovely!

Funny enough, there is NOTHING on WD's website telling me anything about this issue, yet it's all over the net.

The latest firmware is dated november 2006, so the drives already come with it.

Not sure if I am going to RMA it or send it back to Dell as DOA. This thing is brand new, arrived today.

I was unaware of the installed firmware. There was no mention of what was installed or anything. Hell, there is no mention of what the reset button is for.

I found a nice thread over on WD's forums about someone who figured out how to fix it. However, it's 50/50 when it comes to getting the USB portion fixed.

The device is now working again. Almost. It works with Firewire, but not USB anymore. Drive spins up and everything works as it should connected via firewire. I am going to return it though. Not playing with this crap.

Do yourself a favor and send it back to Dell. I've had 3 hard drives from Western Digital go tits up on me within 1 month of ownership of them all. I bought one, it died and was replaced. The replacement died and it was replaced with another WD. It died. I tossed it and bought Maxtor drives, and two of them have been on now for over 6 months nonstop without a problem. The third one I have is used less frequently, but so far it works like a charm. I'll never go with WD again.

I know Dell pushes those rather hard, and if I'm not mistaken, that's what they use in their computer systems.

It is the reverse for me. Always had problems with Maxtor. Never had a problem with Seagates.

It has been setup for exchange.

Hard drives always break, and with the exception of the Deathstars, it's pretty much random what make and model. The My Book Pros at least have an extended manufacturer warranty.

I am curious if the hard drives can be swapped out for something other than WD drives. I might try it out and see what happens.

If you can get your money back look into Synology.

You can put whatever drive you want in them.

I have one and have had no problems with it.

How does the NAS compare to Firewire 800 though?

Well, it's ethernet attached so it will be slower, but it does support GE.

Advantage is that more than 1 device can use it vs locally attached, supports streaming, has a photo book, download redirector...and much more.

No comparison for me, I have several locally attached devices, but I use the Synology as my central backup and shared data location.

Well, I will look into it again if I have issues with my replacement WD Book. I really don't need to share it with anyone else. It's just for my use

I'm not trying to convince you to get one, it just seemed like you were looking for alternatives...
