Here's an example why we need to watch for region 1 and region free Blu-ray releases in other parts of the world.
While on ebay searching for SuperBit DVD's with dts 6.1 audio, low and behold, an offer for the entire Lord of the Rings saga, all three theatrical releases, "including" new scenes and expanded scenes, not on the US versions. I immediately purchased the set from Moscow, Russia of all places. Upon arrival, they were region free, all in SuperBit with dts 6.1 audio. The point here is to watch as Blu-Ray movies unfold 'throughout the world' for releases that may not be available in the USA. I know of no others who have the set I purchased in Moscow. A real precious find. This could also be true in Blu-Ray. Let's watch and see!!! Jim Last edited by JimPullan; 08-15-2006 at 03:11 PM. |

how that isn't released in the yes makes me mad
however, isn't superbit a Sony thing? While I think New line was the studio, I don't know if that is a Sony company. |

Sony could be the distributor for New Line in region 5. I know they distribute for Universal in Japan and have put out a few Paramount releases in Germany. But, you have to be careful on eBay. There are a lot of bootleggers selling there. Claims of being superbit with DTS when you know of no such domestic release always should raise a flag. If the disc is marked as Region 1, that's a dead giveaway that it's not legit. There's no such release in this country. A colleague of mine is reviewing New Line's new releases for these three films right now. And we've been talking about it. It's nice that they've optioned both cuts of the film, via seamless branching and still split it onto 4 layers of information (disc one of the new 2 disc sets is a DVD18).
As for buying BD titles from other regions. You'll have to be extra careful that they're legit due to the new copy protection measures implemented by the BDA. Though, I'm not sure BD even supports multi-region playback like HD DVD does so far. And, modifying the players in any way could result in the player being disabled. |
