Default PS4 will make $1.2bn each year from PS Plus

Sony's decision to put its PS4 online multiplayer services behind a pay-wall will drive consumer spending on PS Plus to $1.2 billion per year, a games business analyst has calculated.

Research firm IHS Electronics and Media said "Sony has already taken a major step towards a more profitable and competitive PlayStation business with a single but significant commercial decision to place online multiplayer gaming behind the PlayStation Plus subscription pay-wall".

The analyst team estimates that Sony made just $140 million from PS Plus subscriptions in 2012, while Microsoft brought in $1.25 billion. This gulf in spending, say the analysts, will be bridged once PSN multiplayer is only accessible to those who pay a monthly subscription.

Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, which place most online Xbox services behind a pay-wall, has made Microsoft $4.7 billion since its 2002 launch, the research firm claimed.

Microsoft and Sony have not publicly verified the data.

At E3 in June, Sony announced that PS4 multiplayer will require a paid subscription. Sony Worldwide Studios president, Shuhei Yoshida, told CVG that the fee will "fund improvements to the service.

By contrast, at E3 Microsoft revealed Games for Gold, a new service that gives Gold subscribers two free old games per month, which has been likened to the existing PS Plus Instant Game Collection offering.

The two manoeuvres bring both PS Plus and Xbox Live closer together in terms of value added to these online services.

IHS Electronics and Media also claims that the PS4 business will be more intrinsically profitable than the major-loss-making early days of the PS3.

It said Sony's games business was becoming more robust because of "lower research and development costs for PlayStation 4 hardware, additional revenue streams from online service subscriptions and a more aggressive transition to higher margin digital content sales".

That money had better be used to improve the online experience on PSN.

This is a good point.

Right now PS makes up for this by adding free games per month on PSN. Can they use this as an excuse if PSN doesn't shock & awe people on PS4?

Its going to be a while before Sony can start adding free games from PS4 to PSN.

The ONLY way they can overcome this to make a bunch of PS3 games PS4 compatible.

Didn't they say they would have at least 1 free PS4 game per month? Be it a PSN title or a retail title that's still pretty good considering that it will be a new system. I can't see them giving more then one a month until maybe 2015 when there is a big enough selection on the market for them to choose from.

We already get the PS+ version of drive club, who knows what others they may have in development. We may see some Indie games release relatively quickly

No.

They said a free game with a PS membership per month. Platform non-specified.

Actually from the First PS4 PlayStation Plus "Instant Game Collection" titles announced at E3 thread:

Quote:
Available to add to your collection for the first 12 months from launch:

DriveClub PS Plus Edition

And one new title replaced every month including:

Don't Starve
Outlast
Secret Ponchos
Like I said PSN games are going to be what gets thrown out there for free ever month at least until 2015. Since Driveclub PS+ edition will be out there for the first 12 months from launch it's safe to assume that that is a buffer until there are more title which can be offered. In addition to what has already been announced I can see The Witness and and Transistor both getting a free month.

Yeah, I made a comment as such in the other threads. PS+ is not going to have much to offer PS4 users in the first year. A truly GREAT game is not going to show up for free when they could sell it.

Now it should be no reason to have PSN go down so much now? if you are going to do maintenance at least do it off-hours.

Yes, but on what platform? Also IGC is a weekly service, not monthly.

All of the games above will only be on PS4 so I don't see how you can say what platform. Not to mention that the announced that they were the games for PS4.

Fair enough.

I'm just saying don't expect those games to spotlight the IGC of the month. For all we know the Vita could have the best PS+ title released during 1 month.
