As far as the speakers, it has been a while since I listened to either brands but I was always a fan of Paradigm and not too much to the Def Techs. But then I only use to listen to them in 2 channel stereo and never listened for home theatre which is how I always listened. |

The PS3 was one of the first HDMI 1.3 devices released.
The chipset used doesn't bitstream the new HD audio formats. If audio is a priority, then a standalone IMO is a better choice. If gaming is a priority then a PS3 is your only choice. (or a 2nd player for blu duties) |

"Bitstream" refers to what is on the disc. PCM is its own bitstream, if it is stored on the disc as uncompressed PCM (UPCM).
What the current PS3 cannot do is to send Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio (MA), the only two non-UPCM lossless codecs, in bitstream form over HDMI. (You can never send multichannel lessless audio, whether encoded in bitstream form or in PCM, over optical. This is for copy protection reasons. But that has nothing to do with this discussion.) What it can possibly do is to decode these codecs and send them over HDMI as multichannel PCM over HDMI. Since these codecs are lossless, and are transferred over a digital channel, theoretically this will be identical to the receiver doing the decoding. (There have been some conflicting reports on the Internet as to whether they are actually distinguishable or not, but since those are only coming from people with extreme high-end systems, it's probably not relevant to most of us. ![]() In fact it can already do that with Dolby TrueHD. There has been rumors of Sony working on DTS-HD MA decoding as well, but there has been no indication as to when it's actually coming. (People seem to think the Cell has enough horsepower to decode DTS-HD MA, but there may be some software or license issues that have to be cleared first.) It might come tomorrow, or it might never come. Nobody knows yet. ![]() enjoy gandalf ![]() |
