Question Broken BDP-S300

Hello all -

Please excuse any mistakes/ignorance as I am new to this forum and new to forums in general.

I purchased a new BDP-S300 two months ago along with a new Toshiba 46" Cinema Series LCD TV (model no. 46LX177). The player was connected directly to the TV with an HDMI cable and the sound was connected to an old receiver through the 5.1 analog outputs.

A week ago, I was watching Transformers and started to fall asleep. I turned my whole system off with the disc in the drive and went to bed. When I had time the next day I started the system up and tried to watch it again. The player would power on, but the picture would dance across the screen - it was totally unwatchable. The sound seemed fine though.

I took the disc out and powered the unit off. I powered it up again to see if the Blu-ray logo had a problem, and sure enough, it did. I had just received the 2.6 update in the mail and updated the unit with no issues - but the problem still persisted. I also tried plugging the HDMI cable into the other inputs on my TV with no luck.

My retailer would not take the unit back, so I called Sony. I explained my problem and they said the unit had to be sent in for service. I sent it in and actually received a call back from a Sony technician yesterday.

The Sony guy told me that there was nothing wrong with the player. He said that I had the video output set to 1080p but the TV wasn't capable of it and I would need to set the video output to auto. He also said that the unit wasn't capable of upscaling to 1080p and I tried to gently correct him on that point. I related that the TV was certainly cable of 1080p and also had 120 hz frame rate technology.

Then he said that I had left the disc in the drive and that it was trying to read it as a system disc and that was causing the issue (?). I explained that I had started up the player with no disc and the blu-ray logo had the same problem. He said they were still going to send the unit right back. Don't get me wrong, I want my BDP-S300 back right away, because I really miss it. I want a WORKING unit back, though.

Luckily, I got a call back in about 10 minutes, and the technician said that after relaying everything I said to an engineer, they were going to keep it until Monday night to try to recreate the problem I was having. I still don't have great confidence in the service, however.

Has anyone else had a similar problem to mine? Did I have the player set up incorrectly?

I'm sorry for being so long, and I really appreciate the insight you all could provide.

Thanks!

Ria

My first thought was 1080p but this is obviousley not the issue. Try setting the player to auto still so your tv and the player "talk" to each other to set both the resolution and the frame rate (did you have the player set at 24p?). Although your TV is 120hz will it properly display 24p from a standard res disc? Not sure if this will help but worth a try. Good luck.

After a lot of trial and error with my BDP-S300, you definitely need to set your player to AUTO. I don't understand why, but that solved a whole range of issues between my LCD and BDP-S300. Hope this helps.

When I get the player back I will definitely try setting the video output to auto.

I did have the player's frame rate set at 24p. I can't find any information on whether the TV will display 24p in either the manual or Toshiba's website. The only thing I could say about that was that it was working perfectly with those settings for approx. 6 weeks, until it wasn't.

If the unit is still not working properly when I get it back, I will try changing the frame rate along with the video output.

Thanks so much for your quick post.

Thanks for this. Sounds like you guys probably solved my problem and I will definitely experiment with this when the unit comes back.

I really wish I was able to get the Sony 46" XBR. It was soo expensive and I had a really tough time convincing my husband to get the set-up we have. Electronics roles are reversed in my house - he could care less about them.

Thanks again for all the great (and fast!) information. I will update this thread with my progress.

Default BDP-S300 & Toshiba LCD 46LX177 Compatability Problem?

Well, the saga continues. Sony did extensive tests on my blu-ray player and could find no problems. They sent it back home. I plugged it in and tried your suggestions, and I still could not get a stable picture through the HDMI ports. I am able to get a stable picture through the component inputs, however.

I called Sony and spoke to the technician that worked on my player. He suggested that the TV may be the problem. He assured me that he will continue to research this on his end, however. I went out and bought another DVD player to test the TV (since returned). Sure enough, I couldn't get a stable picture through the HDMI ports with this player either.

I called Toshiba and they put me in contact with a local auhorized service center. The service center told me that they will have to replace a board in the TV (they have to order it), and that repair will be done in my home in approx. 2 weeks.

A day after I spoke with the Sony technician, he called me back. He told me that he has contacted Sony Engineering to research this. He is concerned that there may be a handshake compatability issue and that the player may have sent out a signal that stopped the TV from communicating with other components. He told me that as soon as he hears anything, he will get back to me.

Obviously I'm concerned. Once the TV is fixed I don't want to hook up the player and have the problem occur again. Keeping the player connected to the component inputs is not an acceptable solution either, as I loved how the BDP-S300 upscaled my regular dvds and played back blu-ray disks in 1080p.

Hopefully it was just a weak board in the TV and once it is fixed, that will be the end of it. The way Sony is now jumping all over this is giving me pause, however. While interesting, a compatibility issue between these two components is taking the format war a little too seriously.

Has anyone else experienced or heard of a similar problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much!

i get a little bit of pulsing white intermittant flashing of snow that covers about a four inch band to the entire screen on my Toshiba LCD in my kids room connected to a Toshiba HD-A2 HDDVD player. You'd think two toshiba products would have no handhsake issues. Since it doesn't continue to do it after 20 or so seconds i've let it ride.

Thanks for the post. From what I've read so far on the internet, it seems like handshake issues can crop up no matter what type of components are hooked up.

So far I've never heard of a problem similar to mine. Most handshake issues don't cause the TV to stop communicating with everything, so perhaps the TV just has a defective board. At least that's what I hope it is, because I'd hate to think that the player did something to the TV, like the Sony rep was alluding too. I'm hoping that once the TV gets fixed, I can get back to watching my BDs and DVDs in 1080p!

I'll update the thread once I hear from Sony. Thanks again.
