Got Redline in the mail today. I've seen it in theaters and it's one of the most visually amazing animes ever. I guess people have their typical complaints that the story is "generic". I'm not sure why more people can't appreciate the visual art of moving image and animation and can only focus on the script, but that is really their loss.
What I don't understand is why Blu-Ray.com gave the extras a 2 out of 5 low rating... it has a making of that is over an hour long in 1080p! That's more than most, if not ALL blu-ray extras. It must be the absolute worst making-of in history? |

I just watched it via the Criterion channel and it’s utterly wild, over the top, hyper-kinetic and completely incredible. Loved every minute. The soundtrack is amazing as well.
I had forgotten I bought the blu-ray years ago. It’s been sitting on my shelf all these years and I feel lame for not remembering. |

Idk if this is helpful to anyone but if anyone is looking to spend aftermarket prices for the North American release of this film on Blu ray you very well may be gambling with your money. I tried to rewatch my copy of the film the other day that I bought in 2012 and the disc no longer plays. I tried 3 different blu ray players, It didn't boot up in my Ps4 or my Blu Ray player. I did manage to get to the menu screen with my Ps3 but it froze after selecting a menu option and would not boot up again after that. I looked up online to see if this was common and I found some rather recent posts elsewhere talking about how they bought brand new copy and it failed on them right out of the box, bought another new one and it failed too. So it seems these discs are starting to fail buyer beware if you're willing to pay aftermarket for these I guess.

For what it’s worth, I just checked my 2012 North American release Blu-Ray disc and it works fine. Boots to the menu and I played the movie for about 10 minutes. Also played some of the making of documentary. This was on an Oppo UDP-203.

I guess you're one of the lucky ones. The Ps3 I tried playing it on is the exact same one I used years ago so I know it's not a compatibility problem with any of the consoles/players I have. I'm guessing there may have been a batch of these that were not manufactured very well and those are the ones that are ending up failing or ones that were apart of the first pressing only or something.

So a 2012 Redline BD has a higher than normal chance of failure. However, the issue was resolved after that year, so if you got a Redline disc made in 2013 or later, there's no risk. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell when the disc was actually made. If you have a 2012 made disc, it may or may not have failed; not every disc made in that timeframe has failed, just a lot of them. Unfortunately, even if it works now, there's also a risk it just hasn't failed yet, and you'll find it no longer works in a year or two. Or it might work for the next 100 years; you just can't know whether it's a properly made disc or a defective one that hasn't failed yet. If you pick up a used copy, you have no way of knowing when it was made, so it's hard to judge the risk. But there is a higher than normal chance of getting a bad disc, because of all the 2012 printed copies floating around. The Japanese release would not have this problem, because it’s an issue with the American replicator that Anchor Bay used back in 2012. |

This BD replicator (mould code IFPI 2F29) had extremely poor quality control from 2006-2012, with an extremely high rate of failed discs. Old Lionsgate BDs are notorious for high failure rates because they heavily relied on this replicator. Fox and Anchor Bay used them as well. For the most part, these issues fortunately passed anime releases by; unfortunately, Redline is one of the few anime BD releases caught by it. In theory, many Redline BDs should be fine; the original 2012 printing is going to have a high failure rate, but I assume printings were done in 2013 or later, which would be fine. That's not much help when you have no way of knowing when your disc was made, though. I've considered getting the Japanese BD as a backup myself; just because my disc worked the last time I checked it doesn't mean it hasn't failed since (or won't fail next year), and having a release pressed elsewhere side steps the whole mess. |

I just checked my copy I bought on Amazon a couple years back. It still did a full disc rip just fine. It also doesn't have the IFPI 2F29 SID code that Glorian mentioned. (It has IFPI KKT3.)
Also unrelated, but it feels like the edges of my disc are smooth/rounded? If you've ever felt a Wii U disc it feels similar to those. I don't remember any other disc in my collection having that. |

I've got other BDs with that very rounded edge, although I couldn't tell you which ones offhand. Not sure of the reason for the difference, but it's hard to miss. |

This came up in another thread not too long ago. My 2012 copy of Redline still works, I think I made a rip of it for a backup just in case. I'll need to recheck if I did. The movie is visually stunning with a great soundtrack, unfortunately the story is weak in its middle section. However, its still very entertaining and its a crime that its not available any longer.
And yes Anchor Bay has been a terrible steward of anime properties. |
