Thumbs up Planes (2013)

Planes, the previously announced DisneyToon Studios direct-to-video spin-off of Disney/Pixar's Cars, will be getting a theatrical release August 9, 2013.

From Big Screen Animation:

Quote:
Breaking News: Planes, DisneyToon Studios' spinoff of Pixar's Cars franchise will be getting a theatrical release on August 9, 2013, instead of going direct-to-video as previously announced.

Planes was originally slated for release in Spring 2013, then moved to Fall 2013. It's been about a year and a half since Disney released the teaser, so expect to see a new one soon.

The film, featuring the voices of Jon Cryer and Brad Garrett, follows "Dusty, a small town dreamer who longs to enter the most epic around-the-world air race, despite his fear of heights."

Not surprised this is getting a theatrical release. Looked just good enough to get one, but not good enough to get me to see it

Think Pixar is finally starting to realize they miss out on that valuable August audience, since they usually make their big splash in June, and are gone by the time some small-timer comes in during the "cleanup" season and corners the before-school doldrums.

Brave could have done much better in the longrun if it wasn't competing with Batman, and gave itself a nice relaxed August to go with its weaker plot, to push out Ice Age and let more parents find it.
Here, this one's small enough to be a "vacation" feature rather than a tentpole, and Disney usually saves its own throwaway movies for February.

This is not made by Pixar. The logo already tells you this.

I can see many being confused though because it does say "Above the World of Cars". Sullying the brand is all this will do. It looks terrible, they even use the Lightning McQueen eyes.

One to avoid.

Looks like it the first of many spin-off:

Quote:
DisneyToon is also working on a sequel, called Planes 2: Fire and Rescue.

Besides the Planes trilogy, DisneyToon is considering to make more spin-offs that would feature other vehicles like boats and trains, and which may go into production if the Planes series is well received. John Lasseter said: "I kept thinking about—I’m a big train fanatic. I love trains. And I started thinking about trains, and boats and airplanes. And I kept wanting to have more and more of those type of characters. [...] It’s one of the ideas, that there will be an ongoing series. It almost starts getting into this thing where we fall in love with these plane characters, we want to see more and more stories with them. And then you start doing other vehicles and stuff like that. Yeah. So it kind of is a bigger idea that can keep expanding."

It was Pixar's own IDEA, in that they had originally wanted whole subplots of talking planes in the Tokyo airport scenes of Cars 2, but most of it had to be cut for streamlining, and they considered sweeping it all off to a spinoff instead.
And then, of course, giving it to ToonStudios, as Pixar didn't consider it worth taking non-feature time away from their Toy Story shorts.

And, as noted, John liked the idea. If he didn't (and things don't usually get around him in the studios, qv. Tinker Bell), it wouldn't happen.

I saw the trailer for this on Brave. But the odd thing was that they had White Zombie's More Human Then Human in the trailer. Rob Zombie and kid friendly stuff don't exactly go together.

I'm in the minority (it appears) that enjoyed watching both Cars movies with my kids. I'm keeping an open mind about Planes. If done right, it could be one of those rare spinoffs that is worth something.

But I was hoping it would be direct-to-video earlier as originally scheduled as I would have a chance to rent it from Redbox or Vudu before buying. I'm leaving country in June and will have to rely solely on word of mouth about the worthiness of the end product.

I'm looking forward to it to, and I actually liked Cars 2.

Walt Disney Pictures just posted on Twitter:

Quote:
Just announced: Comedian Dane Cook will lend his voice to Dusty, the lead character in Disney's Planes, in theaters August 9!
Jon Cryer previously dropped out of the role.

Really? Just because of that? It's just the voice of a cartoon character, not a leading role in a high budget blockbuster.

He doesn't. The air he breathes is way above your paygrade.

Pretty sure Cars 2 has already beat it to the punch.
