First some standard BD SDR 1080p x 1920 709 gamma 2.2-2.4 (2.4 seems to be the new black) mastered for 100 nit monitors images vs 4K UHD HDR 2160p x 3840 2020 (probably colors have circa P3 to Adobe1998 range currently) PQ 10000 nit images (probably actual peak values peter out to ~1000 currently) brought within a 320nit monitor range as you know.
BD vs UHD comparisons: BD Screenshot (optimized for 100 nit monitors) ![]() HDR screenshot (optimized for 320 nits monitors) ![]() BD Screenshot (optimized for 100 nit monitors) ![]() HDR screenshot (optimized for 320 nits monitors) ![]() BD Screenshot (optimized for 100 nit monitors) ![]() HDR screenshot (optimized for 320 nits monitors) ![]() Now, if we "equalized", the images as they would be seen side by side on same size monitors, one a SDR 100 nit 1080p HDTV monitor, the other a HDR 320 nit 4K UHDTV monitor, or both images seen on the same UHDTV monitor, with the BD images displayed properly at 100 nits as they are designed (100 nits being 3 times darker), this is what they'd look like: (This comparison should be done on a monitor that has 300+ nits of brightness. Ex. new iMacs,in a darkened room) Opening the images in tabs pairs as full 100% size and alternating tabs you might see a difference in sharpness too but you prpbably need to be siting at 2X the 2160p full image's height's distance.. Of course to see them proper brghtness you'd have to increase the brigness of the monitor seeing them to each specified value: This one I did recently which I've updated with the true 2084 Top to bottom 10000 being 100% on pic 3200 1000 320 100 being 100% on pic (First one is the standard PQ image, the others as you know require each a different increasing of L) ![]() These next ones are even older, done when I had gotten the member's profile. They probably would look with "increased gamma" with the new correct 2084 profile curve. I think I made a more recent version of these somewhere but I don't know where I put it. If I find it (or I might just redo them properly with the new spanking 2084) will update them in this post. Successive ~0.83 f/stop lighter and lighter exposures in the 6.64 f/stop range from 10,000 nits brightness = 100% limit on pic, to 100 nits brightness = 100% limit on pic . ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() values top to bottom: 10000 = 100 % on pic 5600 3200 1800 1000 560 320 180 100 = 100 % on pic Now some more HDR images examples: HDR screenshots (optimized for 320 nits monitors) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You can see more in the Review pages' screenshots: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Sicar...1/#Screenshots https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-A...9/#Screenshots https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Sausa...2/#Screenshots https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-A...6/#Screenshots https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-S...7/#Screenshots (More to be uiploaded and added in the next days ) Deci can take his experimental mad scientist googles off now. ![]() --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- and Discovery requires collaboration. ![]() Thanks Elle!
