Well, the year is over and I think most have an idea of what their favorite releases of 2023 were. Just curious to see what others thought were their favorites of the year. Here is my top ten. Cemetery Man would probably be on this list, but my copy hasn't come in yet.

The best release this year according to me is, without a doubt, The sensual world of black Emanuelle. Just a wonderful release.

Lilya 4-Ever is a masterpiece. On the strength of that film I picked up this collection and had a great time working my way through Lukas Moodysson's filmography as well all the supplements, and the hardbound book and poem included in this really well put-together boxset (which was a great value too)! Definitely the release I devoted myself the most to this year.

I'm a Bowie fan, and this documentary is a masterpiece. The best movie I saw for the first time this year. I hate that I missed it in IMAX last year. I also hate that this got announced right after I bought the standard blu-ray. But I love that it got a 4K after all, and from Criterion! The box is so shiny!

My all-time favourite show finally got the ending it deserved in this direct-to-bluray movie for fans only. I had to rewatch the whole series to prepare for this but it was worth it.

After Third Window cancelled their Suicide Club release, and Grasshopper cancelled Red Post on Escher Street, thank God Discotek followed through with releasing this restored classic by my favourite filmmaker. Hopefully it won't be the last of his movies to get restored.

I blind-bought a lot of random Japanese and HK movies this year, and many of them could sneak onto this list when I actually get around to watching them. But of the one's I've had a chance to watch, this one is an unexpected favourite!

Inu-oh was a phenomenal blind-buy early this year, except I should have held out if I knew they were going to release this boxset. I also already own Mind Game, which is a masterpiece. But I've been meaning to buy TNISWOG, and haven't seen the other two, so this is definitely a very cool boxset from my favourite anime director of late, that was well worth it even though I own 2 of the 5 titles already.

I haven't actually seen any of these yet, I only got this a few days ago, but I've been wanting to watch SSM&PHG forever and this is an amazing set no matter what.

I watched Barbarella for the first time this year and... it's amazing. Gorgeous 4K LE boxset from Arrow, who can resist?

I've been revisiting a bunch of South Park and Trey Parker stuff recently, and wanted to revisit Team America, so this release was announced in the nick of time, as I really didn't want to buy the crappy existing blu-ray. I probably haven't seen this since high school. It was an absolute riot and joy to rediscover this one.

One of my favourite, underrated Scorsese pictures, conspicuously absent on the blu-ray format, finally gets the full 4K Criterion treatment. Now where is Bringing Out the Dead?
