Default The Hangover Part 3

After the monster weekend that Warner Bros. enjoyed with The Hangover Part II, there was no question at all that a third film would quickly go into development. The first step in that process is pulling a writer to develop the script, and Warner Bros. and Legendary have reportedly tapped Craig Mazin for that gig. And if a recent interview he gave is any indication, the third film might have a hell of an ending.

The Tracking Board and The Wrap report the hire of Craig Mazin, who wrote the execrable sequel with Scot Armstrong.

Last week, the writer talked to Badass Digest about possible ideas for the third film, saying:

Quote:
I think the third movie ends with Doug (Justin Bartha) staring at a row of crosses in a graveyard. It’s everyone – his wife, his family is dead, everybody from the first movie is dead. Somebody shows up and tells him his dog is dead.
We’ve seen director Todd Phillips saying more than once that he wants to break the mold of the first two films for the sequel, and so something that is completely devastating and apocalyptic like that would be one way to go.

Hopefully this would come as part and parcel of some of the characters being forced to recognize who they really are. Stu (Ed Helms) saying “I have a demon in me” at the end of the second film doesn’t nearly go far enough to engage the fact that he turns from responsible stuffed shirt to raging sociopath when he drinks. I’d rather see the third film ending with Stu finding that he has destroyed everyone around him, but since this one is probably supposed to be a comedy, I don’t really expect something that hardcore.

‘The Hangover: Part III’ Goes In New Direction; Breaking Alan Out of Mental Institution?

A significant amount of discussion about the quality of The Hangover: Part II revolved around the fact that it was basically a remake of the first film, both in its plot structure and in its story beats. In a column on the subject, Matt Singer writes the following:

Why are there different standards for horror and comedy sequels? You can’t say that comedy is different from horror because jokes depend on surprise — so do horror films. We watch great comedies over and over, savoring the stars’ delivery, memorizing our favorite jokes. I couldn’t count the number of times I’ve seen “Blazing Saddles” or “The Naked Gun” . . . Repetition and ritualization is part of the fun of great comedy. So what’s the problem with repeating and ritualizing it in the form of a movie like “The Hangover Part II?”

Looks like we won’t need to reflect on these existential questions anymore, because according to a new interview with actor Zach Galifianakis, the third Hangover film may jettison the plot structure from the first two films in favor of something completely different. Read more to hear what we know so far.

According to Rolling Stone (via The Playlist), Galifianakis is already being pestered about doing a third entry into the series. “They want to do a Hangover III…I’m getting fricking phone calls already,” says Galifianakis. The third film evidently “focuses on [Galifianakis'] character escaping from a mental institution with help from the wolf pack.” Maybe recently hired screenwriter Craig Maizin has a couple new ideas up his sleeve after all…

I can’t imagine Zach Galifianakis is pleased with the prospect of another sequel. According to Time magazine’s profile of the man, Galifianakis has a “hate-hate” relationship with his fans and is particularly uncomfortable with the levels of fame that The Hangover brought to him. Also, lately, it feels like my colleagues from the /Filmcast and my friends in real life are suffering from Galifianakis Fatigue Syndrome (GFS), in which they have grown tired of his on-screen oafishness and buffoonery. But perhaps a new format will help restore The Hangover into critics’ good graces (not that the films need it).

Obviously this is preliminary information and things may be subject to change, but what do you guys think? Are you excited for a third Hangover film, and would you want to see it even if it was completely different than the first two films?

Well, it can't be worse then the second...At least I hope. I kinda like the idea of them breaking Alan out of mental institution for some reason...

I can't help but laugh at the beginning part of the article. First they need to hire a writer to develop a script. Why didn't they do that for part 2? And yes it can be a lot worse than part 2.

I think that in Hangover III Alan should screw-up the drinks and give the wives the spiked drinks.

All 3 actors need to be in it, has any of the 3 made comments about if they'll do a third?

I think they all know that it's happening. There was talk about it with all of them in the press conferences before the second and Todd Phillips said they had all talked about it. But I demand Justin Bartha gets a bigger part!

Guy should of changed his job then, seriously, if that's how he actually feels then he should really go f**k himself, many actors and comedians would kill to be in the situation he's in.

As for the concept of Part III, I'm glad it sounds different. But, mental institution escape, that's just a little too dark and out of place (especially since it's called The Hangover), plus, after just coming out of the second one, the other members of the "Wolf Pact" wouldn't seem all that bothered with the fact that Alan is in a mental institution, I'd consider they'd be rather relieved actually.

The reason why I said that is cause of Ed Helms and Zach have shows (Helms on The Office and Zach on BTD) so I didn't know that if they are making a third if they're taping scheudles wouldn't be a problem.

They were able to work around them for the second, so I don't think it'll be a problem.

I want Nirut Sirichanya back. I think he was great as Lauren's father and we need more of him bashing Stu's balls like he did in the sequel.

Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis Want Big Pay Raises for ‘The Hangover: Part III’; Film Could Shoot This Summer for May 2013 Release

The Hangover and The Hangover: Part II may have been pure fiction, but it seems Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms have learned a thing or two from the films about sticking together. The three leads are said to be presenting a united front in negotiations for The Hangover: Part III, demanding $15 million each against backend. To put things in perspective, the first Hangover had a production budget of $35 million total.

THR reports that Cooper, Galifianakis, and Helms are likely to get the sum they’re asking for, which represents a hefty pay raise over the last two films. The trio were paid less than $1 million each for the original 2009 film, with Cooper earning the most because he was considered to be the most recognizable star at the time. For 2011′s The Hangover: Part II, heated discussions resulted in the three principals making $5 million each, plus bonuses that put the actual figure somewhere in the mid-teens.

$15 million each for The Hangover: Part III certainly sounds like a lot, but considering that the first film grossed $467 million worldwide and the second has pulled in $581 million to date on an $80 million production budget, it’s not unreasonable. (Relatively speaking, anyway. It could be argued that movie stars in general are grossly overpaid, but that’s a discussion for another time.) And with two of its biggest franchises on the way out — the Harry Potter film series ended last year and this summer’s The Dark Knight Rises will likely be the end of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies — Warner Bros. is especially eager at the moment to forge ahead with a proven property. The studio’s hope is that production can get underway this summer for a Memorial Day 2013 release.

As for what we can actually expect to see in the third film, confirmed plot details are still scarce, but we do know it’ll be set in Los Angeles with a story that actually differs from that of the first two films. Galifianakis has suggested before that Part III could see his character “escaping from a mental institution with help from the wolf pack,” which would indeed set it apart from the blackout-drunk storyline of Parts I and II. Maybe part of what Warner Bros. is shelling out for is more creativity.

With the amount of money these movies make in profit i would've asked for 20 million.

As they should, even if the person who wrote the article is right, but I don't care. All I care about is that they are actually going to do something different, whatever it ends up being. I hope it gets back to the quality of the first one as well. I didn't hate the sequel like some did and I'm fine with owning it, but I'm not going to lie either.

Im one who loved the first movie and hated the second due to its extreme lack of originality and lackluster script. Still Im hoping that if the third movie takes the series in a different direction and redeem the franchise
