Sony. I have a region free BDP-S5200 and it's great.

Sony have a better track record. Some Samsung players, last time I checked (this time last year) still had undefeatable noise reduction that turned grain into a weird "fizzling" pattern.

Avoid Korean-made electronics if at all possible - they love to use sub-par components to control their costs. Although it's getting harder to avoid them and most everything else is crap too.
What I wouldn't give for the days when "Made in Japan" was the standard. High quality stuff for the mainstream. We won't ever again see electronics that last 50 years or more (I have several pieces nearing the 50 yr mark, incl. my first "stereo", an all-in-one AM/FM + turntable and speakers. Still works great.). Besides the use of crap components, the industry is also vexed with too much "planned obsolescence". As for the OP's question ... Sony. I have a PS3 and a BDP-S790 and they both perform well. Is the 5200 a replacement for the 790 ? Last edited by Midnight Rambler; 01-20-2015 at 02:33 AM. |

I've had a Sony 5100 for a year and it's been a trooper. But there's a particular DVD that it chokes on--a flipper disk from a TV season. Locks up and requires unplug/replug. Other than that, just fine.

My 5500 does the same but it seems to be certain discs. Star Trek Trek The Next Generation was one of them and it's one of those see-through BDs you get. DVDs play fine and the TNG disc plays fine on my PS3. I might try and get a replacement player if I can find the receipt as the noise is very off-putting!
