Default So how much did you pay?

there may be a post for this already but I dont want to look through the rest....

So I like many of you (since this is the blu ray forum) was at first more into blu ray and not hd dvd.. Im not so biased now because I have an hd player and hopefully buy the ps3 since its gonna be cheaper... of course is quality sucks I wont but anywho.

I bought my hd dvd player for $265 and some change, its the rca one and it was brand new. just curious on what everone else payed and maybe a little bit on their opinion of each format.

since I dont have a sig yet my hardware is..

RCA 50" dlp only 720p
RCA hdv5000 hd dvd player
Pioneer HTP-2800 (later I will get a real home theater system)

well I work at the walmart and at my store we had 3 players come in then our store "deleted" the item meaning we will not carry them and the dept. mgr. marked them down 50% and luckily he told me about it as it was the last one... if I knew before I probably would have got all 3 and sold them but thats against policy and could be fired.... but it still would have been cool.

Amazing. What a steal!

In the event that you don't know this already, make sure you have your HD-DVD player set to 1080i anyways, even though your display is a 720p.

Toshiba themselves have even basically admitted that 720p output from the player sucks, for all intents and purposes.

whys that? I never really looked at it close but I thought 720p looked better than 1080i... although ive only seen and have training day and sleepy hollow. It was just a pain when it has to reset to switch the resolution. but thats for the heads up.

Well, normally, you would set the player to whatever the native resolution of your display is and forget about it.

In THIS player's case, specifically, for who knows what reasons...Toshiba themselves basically recommends that EVERYONE use 1080i output regardless.

Their footnote to it was: If they ever put out discs that said 720p on the back, THEN you would switch the player...but since all these discs are already 1080p ready discs...I can't imagine why they'd even bother.

So 1080i for the Toshiba HD-DVD player all the time, no matter what.

now being that mine is the rca, what is the difference between the two toshiba's and the rca?

and I switched it to the 1080i no real difference but if its recommended then ill do it.

also got a couple dumb questions...

if hd dvd only does 1080i now or only, why does the screen on the player have the 1080p option?

and the dumb one.. has anyone ever tried to put a blu ray in the hd dvd, or visa-versa?

None. Same exact hardware. It's a clone.

Whatever looks best to your eyes. Give it a whirl for a while and see how you feel about it.

I think there's going to be a firmware update some day...

I've seen it done. You get nastiness. Not nice.

If you want to shitcan a player...try it.
