Default Close Encounters Vs Shrek III

Close Encounters continues to have a higher sales ranking on Amazon (based on pre-orders). Do you think it will outsell Shrek III next week?

Speilberg or not, a 30 year old catalogue title outselling the second highest grossing film of the year (in the US) would be an amazing acheivement.

While it would be an achievement, the DVD sales is of a different matter. I think SPHE doesn't expect the DVD sales of CE3K to do much damage. I DO think that SPHE expects equal sales as Shrek, and that its people are happy with the product.

I think Close Encounters Is more of a collectors edition sale for people who love Steven's work. Although a great classic it's not a movie everyone is going to go out and buy since they might already own it on DVD.

Shrek 3 on the other hand is a "New" release and will definitely have better sales. But secretly I must admit Id like to see Close Encounters beat Shrek if only by 1%.

It will be interesting to see the Shrek III numbers as I have yet to see an ad for Shrek III that says you can buy it on HD DVD. And maybe that won't matter as the HD DVD camp already knows it's in their format?

And even though CEot3K is catalog, those tend to sell well when presented in a new format. I can't believe it could beat Shrek ... but with the crappy advertising for Shrek, maybe it has a chance.

No. We've seen before that some day-and-date releases that hardly register on Amazon can still do well by Nielsen count. I think it is largely people picking these up in stores without doing a lot of research. I will be surprised if Shrek the Third isn't shown as selling multiple times as many when we get the Nielsen numbers, even though I think it is a poor movie (liked the first 2 though).

Between Ocean's undoubted 2:1 margin, CE3K, and Spidey/Pixar runoff, I'm confident that any sales Shrek does will be handily defused

Add the bogo sales, Shrek III does't have a chance!

I think CE3K will do well for the $$ and the facts that it's not a new release, and Shrek III will not do so well, but better than CE3K. And I don't think that Shrek III is the type of HD-DVD average guys movies... (transformers and Shrek III, not a good match )

Really? Do you read the newspaper? Both the Circuit City and Best Buy Sunday flyers have Shrek III very prominent on both DVD and HD DVD.

Are you saying that as long as studios give Blu-ray discs away for free, they can stay ahead of HD DVD? Along these lines, I am curious if Warner, the only neutral studio, participates in these "BOGO" Blu-ray sales. I have not really followed what titles are available on these sales as I generally get the discs I want when they are released.

Not to go all school yard on you but they started it. If HD DVD did not pay $150 million for paramont they would now be gone. The $99 A2s are also a cheap move.

All Blu-ray had to do was subsidize a few Sony titles, and Disney voluntarily subsidized their movies to. All in all Sony and Disney spent no more than $1 million, if that.

Toshiba spends $152 million on cheap players and paramount and Blu-ray spends $1 million to counteract this and you dont like it? What would you have them do, sit there and take it up the @$$. Blu-ray responded more than fair considering the circumstances.

I'm afraid I don't really understand your point. I was asking a question and you have accused me of "not liking" Blu-ray sales. I have no idea where that came from.

I think it was the pesimistic show me proof attitude you projected in the blu-ray bogo sales against HD DVD. the tables turned how can toshibia lose there asses on cheap players and still compete with blu ray?

It came from looking at your previous posts.

As a matter-of-fact I do not read the newspaper. But I did see a Shrek ad today that said HD DVD at the end. First time I've seen that.

Shrek, like Spidey, will do good numbers despite poor reviews.

It could, because I think most of us Shrek fans agree that Shrek the Third was a big disappointment.

We went to see it on opening day and were let down big time.

It would be difficult to comprehend how it could happen.

Yes, the Amazon have looked good, and that is interesting, but I think overall that Skrek will easily outsell CE3K. How well will be interesting to see.

It will be interesting to see if Ocean's 13 (+ box) on BD can outsell Shrek.

I doubt there is any way this movie will out-do Shrek. They are not even in the same league. Shrek is a movie for kids. CETK is a movie for adults. Shrek came out this past summer. CETK came out 30 years ago.

I think that there is a good chance that last weeks Disney movies might carry over, they are out of stock everywhere though from what I have seen so this could hurt. I think though the bottom line is that Blu will win the week, it is on and has been on a roll!
