The colors definitely look better, especially whites now look more white. But the only complaint I have is that the guy turned my sharpness all the way down to "-10" (facotry setting was 0). He used some sort of "X" and change it until the lines looked better. As a result, Text seems to be less clear and almost fuzzy. Do you guys think he lowered the Sharpness to much?

Did you try raising it up a bit yet to see if it actually looks better?

Which text are you reading?
Just because it's text doesn't necessarily mean it's supposed to be super sharp. It's likely set right as it is -- Sharpness, optimally, should not be on at all... at most it should be at like 10% of the max. It sounds like your TV goes from -10 to some number instead of 0. |

On the video essentials DVD, it say to turn the sharpness down to its lowest setting. To sharpen, noise is added to the picture that can obscure some detail. This is the old NTSC version of video essentials, so I don't know if it applies to current sets.

Get him to change it back. Or can you do it yourself?

It should be smooth, yet very defined. It shouldn't be so soft that you can't clearly see each letter, likewise you shouldn't be able to see the pixel arrangement in the fonts in the PS3 GUI or anything, so not that sharp either. If he previously had his sharpness setting much higher, the correct setting may look softer to him, while still being right.
Chances are the minimum sharpness is the correct one... The sharpness ranges (much like contrast, brightness, etc. ranges) are way too large... there's no need for 90% of the sharpness range they provide on any TV I've seen. It only ends up hurting -- the name sharpness is also sort of misleading, I mean, sharpness sounds like a good thing, so people will naturally crank it higher than they should... though it should really be called "Noise" instead. |

It can be quite a shock after being told that the picture will look better with the sharpness all the way down and especially after seeing the final result. Watch it the way it was calibrated for a few days, don't tweak anything, and I think you'll adjust to the look and notice it looks a whole lot better than it did with the sharpness cranked up. I can't watch movies any other way now.

He calibrated the set correctly. A proper calibration on virtually every tv will turn the sharpness setting either off or very low. It's jarring at first because most people have become accustomed to the artificial artifacts introduced by a tv's sharpness setting, but those artifacts are not there on the original master. Once one becomes used to a properly calibrated television it's hard to go back to the jaggy mess most people watch.

Sharpness adds noise to the picture. If you use any calibration disc such as Digital Video Essentials you will get a screen on which you can turn the Sharpeness up and down and be able to see what it actually does. You are suppossed to turn the Sharpness control down to the point that no additional noise is added, but the line doesn't look washed out. Most of the time this is at the bottom of the Sharpness setting.
