"Sorry Japanese Language Only" Scrolling on Top of My PS3 After 2.0 Update - Blu-ray Forum

Guys,

Just a warning if you have a JP PS3. I have a USA PS3 and a Japanese PS3. Today I updated both of them to firmware 2.0.

The USA one is fine, but now the JP one has a scrolling message at the top of the screen that won't go away:

"Sorry Japanese Language Only. Please Go Into System Settings and Change the Language to Japanese"

I love my PS3s but this is really a problem and annoyance.

Sony made clear that JP and USA would be the same region for PS3, but if they try to lock out Japanese PS3s from English I'm going to be very upset.

Anyone have any information on these changes?

hmm. i hope this is a screwup somewhere.

i have a HK PS3, i didn't really have time to mess with it much post-update (had to run to work) but it doesn't look like mine has that issue.

Actually it sorta does. You'll get news in English, but they're only ones related to the HK PSN, and not your local one. I just turned off the whole RSS thing because of it - I have a HK PS3, but no HK PSN account.

EDIT: Forgot to ask, Krinkle, have you tried going to the new information thing and hitting triangle and turning it off?

Hey Frode, yeah I figured out how to turn it off. Thanks.

However now I realize that the Drake demo I downloaded won't work on my Japanese PS3 even though it is in the USA.

So I am going to have to re-download it again to my American PS3.

I guess this is what I get for being an early adopter lol.

So, you can turn the RSS off?

Whew, that's good to know: My reliable machine's frozen up twice because it couldn't do a second task ubtil the Info finished loading--
I suspect another possible tweak on update 2.01.

I have a japanese PS3 and UK PS3. Updated my japanese ps3, butstill waiting for UK firmware from UK PS site.

no probs. it did not prompt me to switch the language to japanese (I often switch between english, french, and japanese).

Did you update your japanese PS3 with american firmware? (I wouldn't dare doing it - that is why I am still waiting for UK firmware)

You can't. The firmware is signed and will only install on consoles of the correct region.

Let me see if the drake's fortune demo works on my HK PS3.

EDIT: It doesn't. It asks me to insert game disc. Does it work on any consoles at all? I'm going to try deleting and redownloading.

Yes, it works on US/Canadian PS3's.

I just hope they use that Info bar properly to advertise the BD playback to existing users. Only makes sense now that they stuck this RSS feed on there.

It's weird - I redownloaded the demo, and now it just hangs. It doesn't show the insert game disc message. Methinks they broke something. If it was a region issue you'd get a warning message.

I have a Japanese imported PS3. The new bar that is in the upper right corner of the menu in the new 2.0 update is in Japanese only. I can't change it to English. I know Sony did this on purpose, too, because it first warned me in English that it would only be allowed to work in Japanese, and that I should change my entire PS3 to Japanese.

What's next? Will the PS3 force me to work in Japanese only?

Sony, why did you do this? I just disabled your new menu bar! Why penalize people who own an imported machine? We should be able to choose the language! I purchased this machine originally because I heard it worked in English, which it always has. I hope this is not a new trend which will end up with me losing all English functionality in future updates.

If there is a way to change this, please let me know.

I have the same problem.

I hope Sony isn't going to eventually force me to use this machine in Japanese-only! I purchased this because it worked in English if I chose to do so. It's wrong to force a language on users after they originally purchased the machine for a certain functionality!

I suspect this was done ON PURPOSE because people were moving between stores and downloading different free material in countries other than they were in.

This has me very angry.

I sure hope they don't start playing that game. I like the US store because they update it more, and it has lots of high def trailers, the JP site... rocks once in a while (ie: GT5P) and has some cool videos too.

I live in the UK and the store is not update as often (or so it seems) and we miss out on lots of cool stuff. I'm still waiting for Blast Factor Advanced Research and Super Puzzle Fighter. Also the UK store keeps removing stuff, especially the PS1 titles. It seems if you don't download them in the first few weeks, they vanish. I'm disapointed.

They better not start locking us out of the other stores. I'll be pissed off!!

Well, I was frankly surprised they every allowed us to move between stores in the first place. I just don't want to lose English, or my ability to have the English store, at least. In the end, if they forced Japanese on me, it would just mean that I wouldn't be purchasing things from the Sony store, which I do now (since I can actually read it in English).

So it would be their loss, too.

I have a Japp import and same problem, I am also having the lagging/freeze issue when the rss bar is on - I have disabled this but like you all, i so hope they don't force our systems to reject English! especially when we brought on the pretense that it could be defaulted to English!

I am sure the real reason they did this is that the news report on a Japanese PS3 will be for Japan, and they are not going to translate that. You will find a US PS3 will be in English but not give an option to watch the Information Board in Japanese (or most other languages if any).
So since you are running a Japanese PS3, it will only give you the Japanese encoded news. Learn to speak Japanese or just ignore the information board on that PS3, turn it off altogether.
If you are lucky enough to have a US/UK PS3 that has english, then get your news from that one.

I just think they should have taken the news bar info from the store you are signed up to... I waited it out and signed up to the NZ store on my imported japp PS3. You would think it would look at your signin info and then use the corresponding language. Alternatively what if you live in Japan but dont speak the lang?? there should deff be an option to choose the bars lang - in my opinion... but hey thats all it is - my opinion
