United Kingdom Disney's Sleeping Beauty - June 2nd, 2014

Because Aurora deserves her own thread.

This appears to be a standard release, thus confirming the future (or lack thereof) of Diamond Editions and the vault system in the UK. I'm hoping despite this that the disc itself will be the same as the forthcoming US release with new bonus features (should there be any) and not just a repackage.

I just want to know where the £22.99 price tag comes from. This is the most expensive Disney amaray there's been on release day (especially condsidering the most recent releases have not exceeded £15 on release). For a non Diamond Edition especially (though those have not been as expensive on release either), this is really confusing.

EDIT: Also, I'd bet that Sleeping Beauty is going to be one of the next Zavvi steelbooks as well.

I have the original Platinum UK release and the picture quality is amazing.

This is the very first classic movie which Disney released on Blu Ray, and I don't think the picture quality has been bettered. They seemed to put so much effort into it.

There is absolutely no point for Platinum owners to get this release, unless Zavvi releases a Steelbook version (in which case I will too!).

I will hold off for the Zavvi edition.

Default I think that this Sleeping Beauty Blu Ray is the Diamond Edition!

For some reason we in the UK appear to be getting the Sleeping Beauty Diamond Edition Blu Ray scheduled for an October 2014 release in the US in June 2014 as this is the same proposed cover as in their Diamond Edition I wonder if there will be any new features/or an upgrade in the remastering department ( to 4K? ) from the last Platinum release Blu Ray first released in October 2009?

It'll definitely drop in price. Just about everything new that Amazon lists starts off higher than it will actually be a week before release. I've experienced this on multiple occasions.

I'll bet it will be the exact same transfer of the film with a few, probably three or four new bonus features and that will be it.

I'm sure that it will be designated as a Diamond Edition , this is to tie in with Maleficent being released in the cinemas!

I'm pretty sure the new blu ray will be the same as the original but with a few promo features promoting the Maleficent film. The transfer of the film will be the same.

The packaging will be worse than the original though as the original was perfect and the new one will almost certainly have a crappy number on the spine.

WDHV would have to include the first commentary track that was on the DVD special edition and not included on the bluray edition to make me want to rebuy this.

Well, according to some reports and comparisons, the 'clean up' was a little too thorough and fine detail was lost. I haven't got the links right now but there are screenshots out there that seem to suggest computer 're-painting' but in fairness I never noticed anything 'wrong' when viewing the Blu-ray. The screenshots, however, tell a different story. If no one beats me to it, I'll post the links soon and you can make your own judgement.

I think they are just reissuing this and calling it the Diamond Edition; the previous 50th Anniversary Platinum Edition was I think a limited edition and is now out of print and rare to find. I was lucky to find a brand-new Platinum Edition on ebay bought for a stonking £37 with a nice slipcase, a bit steep but worth it. I think there's been demand for a re-release for some time of Sleeping Beauty with it being practically nonexistent to buy new, and this Diamond Edition is it. And yes it will for sure have the Classic number 16 on the spine to fit in with peoples Disney Classic collections. I personally could do without them being numbered, but this new edition will satisfy all those who do. If it is significantly different than the Platinum Edition, I will no doubt be picking up a copy, and not long to wait...

Would be good if the new release drove down the prices of the previous 2BD & 2BD+DVD releases. But it may not at all, if it's only 1 disc.

According to zavvi, the spine is numbered and there's no Diamond Edition title on it, unlike the US edition, you see Aurora on the spine not Maleficent which is much better:

Urgh that cover art is horrible. Much prefer the original.

Yeah, it looks like a straightforward numbered classic release, but for the cover Amazon.uk state 'artwork to be confirmed', so we'll just have to wait and see. I hope it's released with the second extras disc so people aren't short changed. And if so I don't think this will drive down the price of the Platinum Edition because it is unique in itself; the design on the slipcase looks like it's been etched onto a mirror and the cover looks like it's been engraved onto metal, plus the discs are all picture printed, whereas this new release will probably have the boring plain blue disc. Overall I think the Platinum Edition will always be more desirable.

Well, you are talking about 2008 Disney here. 2014 Disney and 2008 Disney are very different entities, when home media is concerned I wouldn't be surprised if the UK re-release is a slipless, single disc repackaging of the original release!
