Already one of next year's top releases!!
Outstanding film and the on-demand MGM DVD release will be immediately discarded. Carroll Baker is impossibly beautiful in this film. ![]() Hopefully, with the other Warner deal Criterion will be able to bring The Grasshopper and The Legend of Lylah Claire to Blu-ray. ![]() ![]() ![]() Pro-B |

Just "watched" the audio interview with Carroll Baker, she of Kindegarten Cop (playing ruthless mother of the killer) for those who first got to know her through that movie.
I loved it, although she laughed off every uncomfortable situation she was in, which I guess could be seen as a positive, but I found it hilarious how she recounted her suspension periods at WB because they only wanted her to play sexy roles and then she was offered the role of a "nun", as they had put it to her, and she says "it turns out she was the bigger w****". LOL Also, she clearly states she got offered the role in The Carpetbaggers at the end of her career. Why would she say that? It was not the end of her career, by a mile, maybe she meant her Hollywood career? |

SPOILERS ahead:
I just watched this and thought it was fantastic. I watched the special features and it seemed like Baker didn't quite understand the story, as she couldn't understand why MaryAnn ended up with Mike. Even the Director didn't seem to understand why. I thought it was obvious. This is my take on it, did anyone draw this conclusion? Mike stopped her from jumping, fed her and gave her a place to sleep. She felt safe. He comes home wasted and tries to attack, she attacks him. She just wants to leave. But, can't. Mike gets scared in the morning, because he sees she's terrified, he's hurt and he thinks he did attack her and she's going straight to the cops if he lets her leave. So, he doesn't. Besides the fact he's keeping her prisoner, he doesn't harm her, and tries to make life comfortable for a hostage. When he finds out he didn't attack her, he lets her go. Now, she's out in the world, and her smile comes back. I swear as soon as she sees the bridge, the word "Home" came to my mind. They were two damaged people who saved each other. I found it strange that the director didn't go into or care about Mike's backstory, seeing how they're method actors. From his line where he says "you're my last chance", I thought ex-con who if she goes to the cops, he's going away for life. |
