I saw this last year - and in typical Greenaway fashion, he mixes in his extremeness of rampant nudity, sexual explicitness, stunning visual aplomb and bizarre storytelling to astounding effect. The DCP was just gorgeous that achieved an almost tactile 'look' - if Greenaway were to film in 3D - this would have been THE film to do this with.

There will be a BFI screening of the film at the National Gallery (London) on July 11th:

"This event takes place in the National Gallery and will include a Q&A with Peter Greenaway in discussion with Betsy Wieseman, the Gallery’s Curator of Dutch paintings, with Colin Wiggins, Special Projects Curator."

The news from Axiom is confusing. The BFI were supposed to handle cinema and home video for this film, but now, it is with Axiom, and the UK cinema premiere event is in collaboration with the BFI on 11-12 July.

I don't understand why this happened, as the BFI have handled other Greenaway films and this seems like a perfect fit for them.

I hope Axiom's BD will be as good as the one the BFI would have prepared...

He actually has filmed in 3D - he recently contributed to the portmanteau film 3x3D along with Edgar Pena and Jean-Luc Godard.

Axiom are completely reliable. Watched their release of Wings Of Desire last night and it looked impeccable! BFI tend to concentrate on theatrical matters it seems - they often work with other labels like Eureka (for Wake In Fright or Nosferatu for example) who end up releasing the blu-ray edition. BFI seem to release blu-rays that they already have the rights to or are planning on restoring. I guess it goes to independent distributors if that's not the case, or if it's a little more specialist.

I know I'm digressing but who the hell owns the video rights of Prospero's Books in the UK - apparently BFI doesn't - this is THE one film I most want on bluray.

that's pretty much it in a nutshell what BFI told me when I inquired about the subject. Now it's just a waiting game to see WHO will release 'Prospero' on blu - that rumored recent Scandinavia blu release only produced a DVD

Greenaway releases on home video are by far the weirdest - I had to buy Tulse Luper Trilogy (DVD) from Australia, 'Baby of Macon' (BR) from (... it's escaping me at the moment), Nightwatching from Sweden. Tempted to get the blu of The Cook, The Thief, from Mexico. I wish Criterion would get up off it's asses and try to wrangle some of the rights for an uber Greenaway US box collection (hey it's just a pipe dream - but it'd be cool)

From wikipedia: "The film is based on the life of Hendrik Goltzius, a late 16th century Dutch printer and engraver of erotic prints. He seduces the Margrave of Alsace into paying for a printing press to make and publish illustrated books. Goltzius promises him an extraordinary book of pictures of the Old Testament Biblical stories. Erotic tales of the temptation of Adam and Eve, Lot and his daughters, David and Bathsheba, Joseph and Potiphar's wife, Samson and Delilah, and John the Baptist and Salome. To tempt the Margrave further, Goltzius and his printing company will offer to perform dramatizations of these erotic stories for his court."

Are there any cuts? Because IMDb states 128 mins but on Amazon it's 117.

I've just spent about 30 minutes searching the internet to try to find the answer to exactly that question. All I found was some talk about it being censored in Russia.

Having bought the UK blu-ray I would be very annoyed to learn that this is a cut-down version.

PS - I've just discovered that you can pay to stream this movie from bfi.org.uk and this site also says that the film is 128 minutes.

PPS - I've just posted a review on Amazon.co.uk pointing out that the film is missing 11 minutes and thus giving it only 2 stars.

Irrespective of the running time on listed on Amazon, what's the duration of the movie on the BR?

According to the BBFC, it was passed uncut - http://www.bbfc.co.uk/releases/goltz...n-company-film

The blu-ray runs for 117 minutes (and is advertised as such).

The iMDB and the BFI pay-per-view both say that it is 128 minutes.

This has been dropping in price over the last few weeks (Amazon UK).

Picked my copy up for £8 last week as part of my birthday box from the other half - but just seen this drop to £6, so anyone that wants a Greenaway fix, I can't see it getting much cheaper, so probably a good time to pick it up.
