Talking Dead Nation – Road of Devastation DLC Announced

Genre: Shoot'em Up
Players: Single-Player, 2 Local Cooperative

Released on the PlayStation Store: Q4 2010

OVERVIEW

From the developer of the popular and successful Super Stardust HD, comes another action packed blaster – this time the infectious gameplay is more gruesome. Taking the essence of Super Stardust HD and what makes it fun and compelling, Housemarque has thrown that into a zombie filled post-apocalyptic universe.

Sometime in the not-too-distant future, a deadly virus is once again sweeping the globe, infecting everyone in its path and killing off almost all the human race. To the horror of the survivors, the dead have begun rising from the grave, hell-bent on feeding on the living and wiping out mankind for good. But, just as it seems all is lost, a small pocket of survivors emerges, determined to take back the world from the undead.

You are one of these survivors. Armed to the teeth and totally outnumbered, you’re the last hope of discovering a cure for the virus and saving humanity. Just remember to lock, load, and aim for the brain!

KEY FEATURES

GLOBAL ZOMBIE INFECTION STATUS MAP
Track your zombie kills with the daily online world map aggregating the scores of players from all around the globe

HIGHLY ADVANCED ZOMBIE A.I.
The “smartest” zombies you’ve ever encountered. These zombies lurk in the shadows and perform surprise attacks, drop down from higher surroundings (buildings, balconies, etc.) right on top of you, and even try to grab you behind or through fences.

ZOMBIE BODY PILES
The most on-screen zombies in a video game to date. If you spot one wandering zombie, it’s more than likely that 30 or more zombies are sure to follow.

Low-res trailer here, HD trailer on the Euro PlayStation Store's.

The lighting, shadows and explosions are particularly impressive.

I'm betting it'll run a lot smoother than similar Unreal Engine powered games, too.

Apart from the obvious zombie clearing.

I found it tricky to see past the generic street zombie slaying concept just watching the trailer but inspecting the screens and reading a bit more about it I'm starting to appreciate it more.

Looks fun. I've avoided zombie slaying games for awhile, but considering this is SSHD dev', I'll bite, it should be a fresh experience. Can't wait.

I passed on Burn Zombie Burn, but considering I love Super Stardust HD more than a glass of warm cocoa on a cold winter night, this is day 1 for me.

The image quality is pretty messed up in the trailer, both in gameplay and the menu shots so I think it's been captured, manipulated or encoded badly. Hopefully not too long before a more professional trailer's released.

IGN @ GC 2009: Dead Nation Hands-on
Quote:
In this particular shooter, you'll still be using the left analog stick to move your character through the top-down environments, but the right stick is only used to aim. Players will now have to hit the R1 trigger to open fire and press R3 to reload. Hitting R2 will execute a close-range attack while L1 throws/uses your character's secondary weapon. The face buttons are used to select those said weapons from a display on the bottom right corner of the screen. Players can also hit L2 to dash out of the way of an oncoming zombie for a short period of time.

Dead Nation already feels great. The controls are super tight, the weapons work nicely and the promise of a rewarding upgrades shop will keep gamers coming back for more. One of the things that amazed me the most about Dead Nation was the amount of detail in the environment, as well as the visual effects that flush the screen with a flurry of explosions and zombie parts. I'm especially impressed by the game's lighting, as every light source casts a proper shadow on the environment, including your flashlight.

Weapons in Dead Nation include a rifle, an SMG, grenades, mines, a flame thrower, a shotgun and more. These weapons can be enjoyed by two buddies at the same time, as local multiplayer is already planned for Dead Nation, though online multiplayer seems less likely. Although this might be disappointing for some, the online functionality planned for Dead Nation is actually quite fantastic.

As the PlayStation Network checks your account for geographic location, Dead Nation will actually start users off in their virtual country of residence, along with other players from that area. Then, players will cooperate as a whole to kill the zombies in that nation collectively and stats are displayed on the world map as you go.

Although my time with Dead Nation was short, the demo level was very engaging and gave me a great taste of what's to come. Running down a rooftop and then opening fire on a horde of zombies is fantastic. The zombie AI is actually one of my favorite parts of the game, as they're attracted to light and sound, and they run towards you when you really start letting loose with the ammo. There will be multiple zombie types to deal with, including exploding zombies, soldier zombies (military men turned undead... they still have guns!), and sprinting dudes. In other words, you're going to be maneuvering around the environment in a blind panic and wasting a lot of ammo as you play.

I absolutely trust Housemarque with this project. Dead Nation already looks sweet and the game still has plenty of time to polish up before its eventual digital launch. With frantic action, local multiplayer, tons of weapons and a unique worldwide scoring system, this is probably a game you don't want to miss.

While I can see why you would mention that with all the zombie clearing, it reminds me more of a fast paced top down version of Left 4 Dead more than Dead Rising. Either way, it looks pretty cool.

Light interview but they're expecting to release around March/April 2010.

We hope you like video interviews, because we’ve been spending the last couple of days running around and sticking our camera in as many peoples’ faces as possible. The first one we have for you today is with Phil Gaskell, senior producer of the newly announced Dead Nation.

Super Stardust HD is still one of my favourite PSN games, so I’m really excited to see how this game is going to develop. Hopefully we’ll be getting some more info and assets for you soon.
