Playing back a *poor transfer* video... scene has a street light in the shot... right at the light, it's bright, but instead of the light smoothly transitioning to less and less bright as you look farther away from the light... it has x brightness surrounding the light, then further away(like a rainbow) it is less bright, then another band of less bright and another and so on.

Also happens with colors.

Here...

A great example of banding is in the "BBC HD" logo clip on the 'Planet Earth' release. It is a visually noticeable layered ring effect around a particular object. I like to refer to it using the term "haloing" as the image seems to have different shaded halos around it. Ususally occurs with bright images on a black background.

And it's not Blu-ray that "intentionally uses grain and banding". Grain is a result of the stock material used at the time of filming. And since Blu-ray can produce a clearer image, it is simply able to show the grain that was meant to be there from the onset of the production process. Banding occurs when studios limit the quality of their transfer in order to save money. In the article above it explains how the 8-bit, 8-bit dithered, and 24-bit variations affect the presence of banding.

I had banding problems with my hdtv after playing too much PS3 games on it. However, I packed up the thing for about a month and then later decided to plug it back in. It turned out that my hdtv self fixed itself. Kinda strange.
