In 1961, I took a party of grade school classmates to attend a screening of COLOSSUS OF RHODES to celebrate my birthday. Have loved the film ever since.
Sergio Leone had directed parts of a couple of Steve Reeves films, but RHODES was the first film to be directed under his own name. It is larger-scale and more lavish than many of the sword-and-sandal films of the day. The statue itself is loaded with secret passages and weapons of war. I believe that this will be the second Italian peplum film to appear on Blu-ray, following Bava's ERIK THE CONQUEROR. Now, we need Steve Reeves to appear on Blu-ray. The best bet for that would be THE SLAVE, since that title was previously released as a Warner Archives MOD. Last edited by Jobla; 03-26-2018 at 04:17 AM. |
