With the age and colorization of the film, what are the chances this will have a good PQ?

I believe both the original B&W and the colorized version (supervised by Ray Harryhausen) are included.

Ray Harryhausen says the budget prevented them from using colour film, and that they certainly wanted to. So, this probably represents as close to the way they had hoped to make the film, as is possible.

This also happens to be a very significant film for FX historians. Notice who is in the commentary with Ray Harryhausen.

All in all, this is one of those special discs people are probably totally unaware how lucky they are to be able to purchase so early in a format's life. So far, we've already been blessed with a few: Bram Stocker's Dracula and tomorrow's Close Encounters being two others.

Next year Disney joins the fun with Sleeping Beauty.

This is truelly WOW stuff. Don't get me wrong, the new releases are amazing too, but we KNOW they'll sell like crazy and have stupendous PQ/AQ. But, it's these significant catalog titles, that appeal to the film enthusiast and are a special treat for the early adopter.

Great - thanks for that bit of info, I truly hope the B&W version is included I must admit I was a bit dissapointed when it looked like it was the colourised version only. Now all I need to know its region free.

I'm asking because Moretonbayblu-ray.com has it listed as coming 1/15.

If and only if it has the original B&W version as well will I buy it otherwise I'll pass. I'm not a big fan of the Ted Turner "coloring" school. I prefer to see the film as it was shown originally in the theater.

AFAIK, all three B/W Harryhausen SD's are reportedly 2-disk sets (except for an all-color boxset), but think this one's the color, to pump up the marketing for the new editions.
And Ted Turner gave up on colorization the day he invented Turner Movie Classics and Turner Restoration Labs to buy back our love, and the process was dead in the water for about ten years--

Sony and Fox are the new colorization geeks on DVD:
FWIW, the software's better now--And this would be the same not-too-bad colorization Sony's been using for the Stooges shorts, with real colors instead of pastel pink and mint green...
But our hearts and minds for "neato" colorization were left back in the 80's, and there's no hope of ever getting it back.

(And besides, Harryhausen did cooler fantasy epics in color than monster mashes in B/W...He was wasting his talent.)

If it mirrors the SD DVD release of a couple of months ago, it will provide a user choice of B&W or colorized versions. The SD DVD is fantastic and I'm looking forward to the Blu-ray.
