So I watched Die Hard 4 last night. I had been looking forward to this so much because of the stellar PQ on recent Fox releases (Silver Surfer, Mr. Brooks, Prison Break). Unfortunately, pretty much from the moment the movie started, it was clear this was not quite up to the level I had been expecting in terms of PQ from these other recent Fox releases. Not that it looks bad by any means, just not the breathtaking PQ I had seen on the other titles I listed. Bitrates in the twenties rather than the thirties. So after the end credits rolled the explanation became clear. In contrast to the titles I listed, the encode wasn't done by Panasonic Hollywood Labs, but by somebody else. Please, Fox, in the future, stick with PHL. The three titles I listed have by far the best PQ I have seen on any discs, and Die Hard 4 just doesn't.
And no, I don't work for Panasonic. My job has nothing to do with the movie business. I am just a consumer. |
