my blu-rays look great on my 46" samsung dlp 720p; i can't imagine it looking much better. from what i've read, you're not gonna see any difference until you go over 50".

You will be impressed just how good BD's are in 720p/1080i on a 50''. A test I have done with my Panny 50'' 1080p & Panny 50'' 720p/1080i hooked up to 2 PS3's with the same BD & the difference is only really noticeable at 3''-24'' or so, beyond that its the same really.

The way I see it is this. 780p looks great but 1080p looks even better. If you going to spend money on new tv go new technology. Dont go cheap. Wait for a few pay days of you must but if you already have a 780p then it will do justice and still look splended

Default 720p

In the Sony line screens smaller than 40" only come in 720p.I would image for a larger screen the 1080p would be comparable to a 720p on a smaller screen

I have a Sony 32" LCD 720p set and a Panasonic 50" plasma. Both have excellent pictures. Certainly the 720p is good on Sony 32".

If budget is an issue I'd drop down in size from the 50" to something slightly smaller in order to get 1080P. IMO there's really no reason to buy a new 720P set at this point - it's already obsolete and is incapable of displaying the input signals at their full resolution. Downscaling isn't helping either.

I've recently assisted my father and a friend in buying TV's and bought one for myself. While we all selected different sets, we came to the same conclusion on 1080P. We figured if we were going to fork out the cash for a new TV, it might as well be the highest resolution. The savings weren't great enough (on quality TV's) to warrant it.

Look at the Black Friday ads. If you are willing to get in line, you can get a great deal on a 1080P set. Best Buy, for example, has an awesome deal on an excellent Samsung LCD (LN-T4066F). Good luck!

go with a 42" 1080p. you wont be dissapointed. unless your only using it for blu-ray then 720 is fine.

I would also go with the 1080P. I bought a Pioneer 720P Plasma 50in about 6 months ago, and I have 400+ reg dvds and am now up to 93 Blu-Ray movies, The tv is upstairs and I pretty much only use it to watch movies and play my PS3.
but with all the blu's obviously being 1080P I decided to sell my tv two weeks ago and I bought the new PIoneer 5010FD 1080P plasma instead. Lost some money on the 720p Pioneer but it still makes me feel better just knowing I have a 1080P tv now., .....by the way, yes I am an idiot, LOL
I also just replace a Samsung 46in 720P DLP with a new Samsung 50" 1080P DLP.
Got to love it !!!!

It really depends on how far you plan to sit from it.

Check out the calculator in my sig and see if a 720p set will be fine in your case.

I got a 50" plasma earlier in the year and it looks fabulous on blu-ray. I had to consider the fact that the 1080p would have been about $1400 more at the time.

The calculator doesn't take into account that human vision is much better than one arcminute, nor does it compensate for downscaling. It's very much flawed and doesn't reflect the reality unfortunately.

yeah I doubt a 1080p 26''-42'' would be that much different than a top of the line 720p/1080i tv
