Little more info somewhere else:
"TDK’s research and development into new technologies is bringing new possibilities to next generation optical media specifications and performance. The company’s advanced material technology was influential in playing a key role in enabling the creation of the 200GB Blue-Laser Disc development. The company’s 100GB prototype disc uses four layers of 25GB to reach 100GB capacity. For the most recent 200GB technology development, TDK has stretched the physical margins of the Blu-ray Disc format to hold up to 33,3GB per layer while staying within the tolerances of the BD playback specifications." |

It looks they can only max out to only use 25 GB per layer meaning that if they utilize 6 layers, the max would be at 150 GB.
I think they would need to amend or make changes to the spec in order to allow for 33.3 GB per layer. |

TDK has been flogging 100 or 200GB discs for a while now. I'd like to see some concrete deliverables. The Press Release overload of some BDA companies just irks me. http://www.de.nec.de/brochure/hd_dvd_e.pdf Last edited by hmurchison; 09-01-2006 at 05:54 PM. Reason: nunya bidness |

I'm thinking TDK could probably ship some 200GB discs in early 2008. I think we need another generation of laser optics before they can do this affordably. This is simply my WAG
I welcome it. I'm not sure i'd want it for movie applications but for data storage needs it could become quite handy in some circumstances. |

That's just the thing, does anyone have any credible links regarding either 45 GB HD DVD discs or 100 or 200 GB Blu-ray discs? No, not really. What I gave was a guestimate. I wouldn't expect 45 GB triple layered HD DVDs at the very earliest, late 2007 / early 2008. By then I'd imagine the BDA will have 100 GB disc ready to counter any HD DVD increase. At the very least there are many links to working prototypes for 100 GB Blu-ray discs and now 200 GB Blu-ray discs. I have not yet seen any articles regarding working prototypes for 45 GB HD DVD discs. But if someone has one...by all means... |

I think your spot on marzetta in terms of woroking prototypes vs not and about release dates for various formats.

TL45 GB support http://www.de.nec.de/brochure/hd_dvd_e.pdf 90GB dual side TL45GB support. I'm pretty sure TL45GB will eventually become a legit product. I'm not sure if it'll be used for movies. |

Yeah with the bandwidth limitations on HD DVD i'd be surprised if it was used for movies to be honest.

Triple layer is not part of the movie format.
On the computer side, I don't think any of the double side formats will be ever be used (be it the 90Gig hddvd or the 400Gig bluray), everyone hates them, just as double side DVDs went extinct after only a few of the early movies. I admit I'd love to backup my entire computer on a single 400Gig dics, but since you have to take it out of the drive to flip it, I'd rather have 2 x 200Gig that a disc that's hard to manipulate and cannot have a full size silk screen. |

ethan I agree. Optical media is always lagging behind tape and now that hard disc drives are cheaper we're seeing more backup to disc. |
