Hi there. I was told on this site a while ago that when u put bit stream on the ps3 through hdmi 1.3a, it sends the signal to the receiver (this being the NEW 905) so it can upconvert it. Ok it says on the manual that the 905 can convert dts hd master audio and dbly hd. Well it didn't do it and i set it on the ps3 to bitstream and the blu ray to dts master audio. Nothing showing dts hd master audio or lossless.
Then i was told by another of u that INSTEAD of doing that, to set the ps3 to linear pcm, then i should see it come out on the receiver. Guess what, no dts hd master audio or lossless. I have a 7.1 klipsh quintet II system with the 10" Klipsh sub with banana plus, 16 guage speaker wire to the 905. TV is a Sony Bravia XBR2. Can ANYONE be KIND ENOUGH to help me to maximize this set up and show me HOW to get this to show because i spent all this money and i still can't get it to work. I called ONKYO and they were NO HELP at all. PLease help, thanks ![]() |

The only way to hear Dolby TrueHD and Uncompressed PCM from PS3 to the Onkyo receiver is to output the audio as Linear PCM. If you set the PS3 to bitstream, you will only hear the "core" audio mix, not the high resolution sound. |

Thanks for the replies. I did try the ps3 putting it on Linear PCM, but as i said b4, when i set the ps3 on Linear as u said, i saw Nothing at all that said dboly true hd or uncompressed pcm/lossless, or in this case, dts master audio hd when i put the fly on. How can i see it say this on the display if i set it the way u said to? That is the problem. I guess it's too new for onkyo cause the 905 says it can convert it but it doesn't and the ps3 itself on linear pcm will not show it as such on the onkyo display. Can u please tell me how to get to see it on the display? thanks again

By the way, if i leave the ps3 on linear pcm, will everything that is not pcm convert to regular doubly? That way i don't have to keep changing it from bit stream to pcm.

Many of us have had the same problem before, and we are all just figuring this out.
I have just got the 705 myself, so am still learning. However I have learned this. The Receiver only shows the Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master logo (or uncompressed) when the Receiver does the decoding. Because the Blu-Ray player does the decoding, you wont see the corresponding logo on the Receiver. Right now very few players send the signal out un-decoded. It doesn't matter. It is the exact same audio. Make sure to enable all the audio streams from your player, and activate the HDMI PCM output. Set the receiver to either DIRECT or MULTICHANNEL ( your choice) and you'll be hearing the uncompressed audio as it was intended. The important thing isn't the logo, but the audio. From what I've learned the display should be HDMI MULTICH PCM on the receiver, and you'll know you have it correct. Be sure to set your Listening Mode Presets for each type of audio. Here's what worked best for me: Analog/PCM = Direct Dolby Digital = Dolby Digital DTS = DTS D.F. 2Ch = PLIIx Movie D.F. Mono = Mono Movie Multich PCM = Multich 192k/176.4k = Direct Dolby TrueHD = Dolby TrueHD DTS-HD Master Audio = DTS-HD MSTR DSD = DSD Using this setup, the receiver decodes what it should, and uses a direct audio for the audio that is already decoded by the player like Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master, and Uncompressed. I've been proven wrong before, so please take my advise with a grain of salt. I'm sure I'll be corrected if this advise is off base. I'm just letting you know what works for me. I have a very similar setup to yours, so I think this will work. P.S. I don't think the PS3 decodes DTS Master, but converts it to a slightly lower quality output. Nonetheless, you should be getting the best quality output it is capable of. If I learn different, I'll post again. Last edited by Kayne314; 12-03-2007 at 05:03 AM. Reason: missed a fact. |

Hi there. I SOOOOOOOOO appreciate u taking ur time to respond, both of u guys. Ok so is it safe to say that since i'm using a PS3 as the actual blu ray player, i can leave that ps3 on linear pcm and never change it to bit stream and as long as i put the setup u gave me above, then that means the receiver will do the work even if i have the ps3 on linear pcm as long as i use anything aside from direct. And when i use direct, then that will be the only time that the receiver will let the ps3 decode the true hd and the master right? I want to make sure because i was told b4 here that i had to change the ps3 from linear pcm to bitstream if i wanted to the receiver to do the conversion as long as it's anything other than dbly true hd or hd master audio/uncompressed 5.1. Thanks again. |

BTW, how do you like your Onkyo NR905? I'm very happy with mine. Replaced a Denon after owning several generations of Denons and glad I did. This is one hell of an AVR for the price. |

1)I want everything to be converted to 1080P so i set the resolution to 1080P instead of Auto (is this correct as i was told that on auto, it would jump to different resolutions based on what the program was but i want everything converted to 1080P. 2)On Picture mode, it has settings like picture mode, which i put on auto, edge enhancement, which i put on high, mosquito NR, Ramdom NR & Blcok NR...i don't know what NR is and i left all of them off. What do u have for these and what do they mean or do? 3)ON the speaker set up, i let the Audyssey do it itself. I have it under YES for subwoofer with the thx ON @ 80hz thx, then the center, srurround and surround back (i have it as 7.1 with the klipsh speakers), they are all at 150hz. Now i switched them to 200HZ instead so the woofer can control all the base alone but then i put it back to 150hz. Was this right or should i put it back to 200hz and why? 4)For the Fronts, it has it as FULL BAND, i had put it to 150hz, then 200hz, then i didn't know what i was really doing or how it affected sound so i put it back to full band and turned off the Double Bass in the bottom. What is this about? SORRY IF THIS IS A BIG LONG BUNCH OF QUESTIONS but as u can see, i REALLY VALUE u guys here and ur opinions and i want to max this 905 out. The instruction manuals tell u nothing and when i called Onkyo, they are just as bad and can't properly answer questions. What are the best peakers settings here? I here all this stuff u guys say about how u here this AMAZING sound so i bought all this and i just here regular surround sound. I want these 7/1 Klipsh to really show me what's up. Believe it or not, my old 321 series 2 GS 2 bose sounded better. I would here swords clasping from the side, across and behind me with a 321 system coming out of the bose from a ps3 game. I thought with this new super 905 model with all the separate transformers and what it can do, that i would get even MORE from this. I'm really getting discouraged here and thinking about getting rid of this all and going back to the bose. PLEASE help a fellow blu ray loving brotha out here LOLOL 'wink' |

Yes, if you have a 1080p display and want all sources (analog and digital) going into the Onkyo to be upconverted to 1080p, then the HDMI output should be set to 1080p. Same goes for whatever resolution you want to output to. If you set it to auto, it will simply output the signal the same way it came in without any upscaling, except you may have problems with 480i sources if your display won't accept 480i via HDMI, as some displays are known to do. 2)On Picture mode, it has settings like picture mode, which i put on auto, edge enhancement, which i put on high, mosquito NR, Ramdom NR & Blcok NR...i don't know what NR is and i left all of them off. What do u have for these and what do they mean or do? NR stands for noise reduction. It is simply Onkyo's way of giving the user control (albeit very limited) of the HQV ReonVX's video processing powers. In this case, Onkyo makes the Reon chip's upscaling abilities selectable but not entirely customizable except with regards to simple noise reduction processing. Personally, I wish Onkyo had more video processing tweaks available to make full use of the Reon chip but perhaps a future firmware update will address this, not that it's a big deal. I'd rather not go into detail about what each NR setting does but if you go to the AVSforum's "NR905 owner's thread", you'll find all the answers you need. The AVSforum is truly a valuable resource for the home theater junkies. Based on personal preferences with every intention of making a softer and more natural image, my settings are: everything off except random NR on medium. I like these settings for most things I use it for (PS3, Xbox360, DircecTV HD programming, all going into the Onkyo via HDMI) 3)ON the speaker set up, i let the Audyssey do it itself. Trust Audyssey. Settings will be different depending on what speaker/subwoofer types you have. Sometimes, the Audyssey will call a particular speaker a THX speaker, not necessarily because it recognized that it's officially THX-certified, but because it's frequency range and sound properties as measured by the Audyssey system has met or exceeded what is expected from a THX speaker. Again you can read more about this for other users on the AVSforum. 4)For the Fronts, it has it as FULL BAND, i had put it to 150hz, then 200hz, then i didn't know what i was really doing or how it affected sound so i put it back to full band and turned off the Double Bass in the bottom. What is this about? Not certain myself. See above, AVSforum will get you answers. Hope that helps. |

Yeah that's what i did, i have the ps3 on linear pcm, then have it on direct for the reciever since i don't see any multi channel display and was told DIRECT and MULTI channel is the same thing but even the ps2 games or regular movies come out as DIRECT and i don't here any 7.1 sound coming out nor is it showing conversion to reg. dobly or dts if the ps2 game is dts for example. |

When the receiver is set on direct then the source component is doing the decoding. In direct mode all the receiver does is apply gain or volume.LPCM direct
through receiver should be as good as it gets. bill |
