Default PS3 Problems (Help)

I was playing Resistance last night, and all of the sudden all of the lights on my controller started blinking, the lights on the console were blinking. Everything was totally unresponsive. It lasted for like 10 minutes before the PS3 turned off by itself. It wouldn't turn back on for about 2 hours. It works now, but this is like the third time this week. What would cause this?

I think blinking reds mean a heat issue. I would call Sony tech and see. Fan is working ok? Any dust bulidup?

It may be overheating. Do you have it in a cabinet or out in the open?

Thanks for the RSS help. It works perfectly!

I'l check into that, thanks.
That was the first time my PS3 has been powered off since July, so maybe there is a heat issue.

Powered off (Switch) or standby (red light)?

I put mine in standby all the time but never SWITCH it off should I be?

Holy crap! I'm surprised it hasn't already melted or exploded. No wait, it's not an Xbox360 is it

I think he means he was on green since July. From what I have heard the Orange or Amber is the bad light, means hardware falure.

I have left mine on for a long time too... since August... to run Folding@Home.
I turn it off every now and then, and I often watch movies or play games on it, but most of the time i leave it on.
I have not had this trouble yet but I will be sure to clean it out and try turning it off every once in a while.

If its shutting down, but coming back on at a later time, its definately a heat issue. As the first suggestion stated, check for excessive dust build up. Get yourself a bottle of canned air or if you have one use your air compressor to clean it out. I've had mine on for awhile now also. I think i'm going to go home and check the internals and make sure its not getting too dusty.

Good luck!! Keep us posted.

I wouldn't do this ... I was using one (the Pelican with the separate power supply) but stopped when I realized the thing was adding extra vibration.

Is there any way to reduce the ambient temperature around the PS3?

That may help.....but like others have said....clean the dust out and make sure it's not enclosed.

I use two of these in my cabinet right behind my PS3 to keep the air moving...my PS3 never gets out of 2nd gear.

800rpm 120mm fans:
clicky

AC/DC adapter:

Here's a kit with everything together...

if youre worried about heat, you can do what i did. i have 2 120MM pc fans attached to the back of my cabinet. i use a standard pc powersupply and used a wire to simulate the power stitch. i just hit the on/off button on the power supply to control the fans. i was scared at how hot my ps3 got in there. now with the fans, i can barely feel anyheat at all with completely silent fans. i did have some faster/louder ones and i could not feel any heat at all ever even after 5 hours of movie/gaming, but the huming/fan noise drove me nuts.

btw, i did it the cheap way, you can find fans that run on 120v or find a different way to power the 12v pc fans.
