Promotional Group announces record HD DVD hardware sales following Black
Friday LOS ANGELES, Nov. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Following landmark Black Friday promotions through major retail chains, the North American HD DVD Promotional Group today announced that sales of dedicated HD DVD players exceeded the 750,000 mark. The data is based on retailer reports and other point of sale data, and includes standalone set-top players as well as the Xbox 360 HD DVD player. "HD DVD continues to gain momentum and market share with consumers," said Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of HD strategic marketing for Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group. "With more than four weeks left for holiday shopping, HD DVD is turning out to be a perfect consumer electronics gift." HD DVD continues to step up marketing and education efforts, helping consumers to see the quality and value of the new format. In addition to an enhanced presence at major retailers, HD DVD has added educational sections to its website at http://www.TheLookAndSoundOfPerfect.com. http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/st...4711631&EDATE= AS WELL AS THE XBOX360 HD DVD player..yea the EXTERNAL DRIVE play's HD DVD movies , and the people that BUY that ADD ON for the xbox360 are useing it for to play HD DVD movies..but the thing is..... ![]() they count that along the same lines as dedicated....O'L please dedicated...that's like adding an external Blu-Ray drive to any PC ,because I bought it to watch Blu-Ray movies.. if that is what the HD DVD promotional group wants to count as a dedicated player. the BDA could very well release a ADD on for PC with an EXTERNAL Blu-Ray ROM drive and call it a dedicated Blu-Ray player.... ![]() yea 100% stupid HD DVD promotional group....what's next i buy a laptop with a HD DVD drive so now you can add in that too.... ![]() but yet they don't count the Playstation 3 as a dedicated Blu-Ray player when they want to TOUT Attach rates...BUT YET IT COUNTS FOR THE XBOX360 ..that's like saying i ADD a Blu-Ray add on to PC's so now i can call my PC a dedicated Blu-Ray player..that is just Silly......but that is exactly what the HD DVD promotional group say's its alright when releaseing total "DEDICATED" player sales #'s ![]() Last edited by joeorc; 11-27-2007 at 09:51 AM. |

Sub $200 PC Blu-ray Reader Coming From Sony David Richards - Friday, 12 October 2007 While Sony Australia is talking of an entry level price point for a Blu-ray player at $699, Sony in the US is set to introduce a sub-$200 Blu-ray disc reader for the PC aftermarket in early 2008. The device will have no burning capabilities for any type of media, said Bob DeMoulin, Sony's marketing manager, branded optical storage. This will be Sony's first foray into the BD reader arena. "A Blu-ray player at a sub-$200 price point becomes real attractive to the consumer. This is how it was done with DVD-ROM," he said. Sony's plans include launching an internal drive, and DeMoulin said there is a great case to be made for... http://www.smarthousenews.com.au/Com...nents/G6L8D4B5 the HD DVD promotional group wanted to bring ADD on drives into this lets see if they cry foul.... ![]() |

approx 500K stand alone HD DUD's + 250K approx XBOX 360 HD DUD add ons. In the "real" world however, you can only count 50% of the HD DUD XBOX 360 add on devices as "active" as, at any given point in time, 50% of the XBOX 360's are in the shop for RROD repairs and the add on cannot be used on it's own (many XBOX 360's break down 3-4 times) ![]() ![]() |

Let's see if all these 750k stand-alone player sales actually turn in to software sales for them. Anyone can dump hardware on the market at give-away prices. It remains to be see however, if any considerable percentage will turn in to software sales. I'd be more inclined to believe these players were either purchased by uneducated (about the format war) significant others or were simply purchased as upscaling DVD players with the option to one day purchase a HDM movie. Afterall, Toshiba themselves have touted their players as upscaling DVD players. |
