Default Blu-ray movies question

Ok, first of all if this was already asked I'm sorry to bring it up again x_x
So my question is, why is it that most Blu-ray titles have "Partially 1080i and 480i" and not 720p on the resolution box? Does this mean that the movie won't look good in 720p? will the movie still look good say in 720p or 1080i? even though its encoded in 1080p?

Yes, to the extent that your TV is a good TV. On a good TV, the picture will be excellent at 720p and 1080i. You can get a blu-ray player and see the best your TV can do... if you don't like it, start planning for a new TV.

The movie is 1080p. The extras are SD.

So is there a major difference when you play a Blu-ray movie on a 720p set and a 1080p one? Can you actually tell the difference?

The special features are usually the same found on the dvd version (including resolution) unless it is a new movie.

The only way you can see the difference between 720p and 1080p is on large screen hdtvs.

Ok...so for example: You have two 32" tv's one 720p the other 1080p. You pop in a Blu-ray movie and start to watch it. So there won't be a difference even though the movie is encoded with 1080p and its being played on a 1080p display? Is the picture downgraded when you play it on a 720p display..

This is were you get into TV quality. You will notice the 1080p has a better picture, however the picture on the 720p will not be "bad" and will show a marked improvment over a SD TV.

Also if the budget only allows for 720 then it's just a matter of distance from screen.

1080p is the highest a BD is capable of playing at. It can play at ANY resolution below that as long as the TV is capable of it. If it is a 720i tv, it will convert it to 720i. if it is an 480p, than you will see it as 480p. But 1080p will look the best.
Personally, I'd rather watch something in 720p than 1080i... if not in 1080p.
