I would suggest you check out these two existing threads

1) https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ight=bitstream

2) https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ight=bitstream

Hope these help. I could try and explain it myself but others have been addressing the issue already, and could probably answer far better then I could.

Sounds to me like you're using optical for sound. Optical only supports 2ch PCM uncompressed audio - still digital, just probably not the (5.1?) surround you're expecting and your receiver will apply ProLogic or whatever to it depending on your settings. When you switch to Bitstream, you're essentially selecting compressed audio and the optical cable has enough bandwidth to send 5.1 surround.

If you want 5.1 PCM from the PS3 you'll have to be using HDMI with a receiver that supports HDMI audio. (Many receivers only have video passthrough and can't pull audio out of the HDMI cable.)

But I'm just guessing on your setup.. would help if you say what your receiver is and how it's connected. And what audio tracks you try to use when watching blu-rays (uncompressed, 5.1 dts, ...).
