Default Region Coding

I've just learned that the hated "Region Codes" are still going to be used albeit changed down into just three. Please someone tell me it an't true otherwise you'll see a grown-up stand in a corner and cry

If it is, then what will happen to all the 'Multi-region" players? Can the new BD players become (ahem) multi-region?

Seeing that Japan has now moved across the world to become Region 1, can the US adopt the UK? We are house-trained (just), don't cost much and we do speaka da Engrish!

Pretty Please!

This appears to be true although I've yet to read anything concrete on the region coding of Blu-ray.

Its mainly a way for the distrobution companies to get there cut of the action and so the studios felt like it had to be in there. My guess is that you may be able to unlock the players to be region free simply because it wouldn't make sense to make 3 different players for 3 different parts of the world. Finding the code may be more difficult but you never know.

Yep my point exactly. I would say that a large block of UK DVD consumers have region 1 discs as the main bulk of their collections along with multi-region players that's why I had hoped that BD would not have region coding. Okay I have no problem with anti-piracy measures but the studios have a bad habit of heavly editing the European releases, hence the reason for buying region 1 discs and for the availability of titles.

As the article I read stated, "The region coding on Blu-ray will be updated dynamically to prevent any tampering to the region coding even if the player has been chipped or modded".

Don't ask me how this will be achieved in practice as the technical blurp was over my head.

I just want to be able to buy a film from where I want and from whom I want, not for it to be decided for me.

My guess is that it will be a part of firmware updates that will reset the region encoding.

exactly. creating a lot of confusion for customers. I think a lot of this is posturing though too i mean look at ict that is included but hasn't been used yet so i think many of these "features" have been included by probably won't ever be used.

I really hope that it is because if there was only the anti-piracy implemented in BD then the sky's the limit on sales of disc's / players. But sadly I think the reality is that we're stuck up the creak without a paddle!
