Default HDMI and Blu Ray

Ok, I know for a fact that technology on LCD tv's, DVD players and home receivers is constantly changing. Having said this, I also know that 1 to 2 years ago, LCD tv's were already equipped HDMI, however, the version of HDMI that came with certain televisions back then were either HDMI version 1.1 or 1.2. Most LCD tv's today are equipped with HDMI version 1.3, which is the latest version of HDMI available. This is to include the Sony BDP-S500 Blu Ray player and 2 of Sony's high-end receivers that decode the latest HD surround sound formats. I currently have a Yamaha DVD player that's hooked up to my receiver and LCD tv via HDMI cables. The brand of HDMI cables is "SonicWave". They are cheaper than Monster Cables, but they do the job. I just read a customer's feedback on Crutchfield.com where a guy purchased the Sony BDP-S500 and claims that he had to buy a different version of HDMI cable so that his Onkyo receiver would decode the HD surround sound formats. He says he had to purchase a new set of HDMI cables that were version 3.1 I thought all HDMI cables were all the same? Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
