Default Poll: Include PS3 in Player Sales?

I am starting a couple polls based on the recent discussion on the 2.7 million blu-ray players sold and 700,000 hd-dvd players sold.

Please think about your answer:

Should the PS3 be included in figures showing Blu-Ray player sales?

The way I look at it is this: CE Manufacturers are mostly interested in Number of units sold, Studios measure their success by the number of discs sold, Attach Rates mostly come into play when HD Zealots comment of the format war.

Given the above assumptions are accurate, the answer is a resounding Yes, we need to include the PS3s in the total numbers because they are Blu-ray players indeed.

I would say otherwise as I'm sure would Sony. I'm fairly Kaz Harai had said so recently.

@DavePS3 "so anyone omitting the unit from the count is doing so simply to lower the overall number when compared to HD-DVD player sales."

- That is completely untrue. I own a PS3 and no other gaming console, nor do I own a HD-DVD player but I voted the third option, a percentage. Although I cannot refute your claim to them being all blu-ray players, I look at them as either active or non-active Blu-ray players. It isn't a matter of wanting to 'lower the overall number' it's simply a matter of perspective. Mine differs from yours, no need for generalizations.

Abso-damn -lutely. It's a player whether it plays other things or not is irrelevant. I don't know anyone who has a PS3, who doesn't have at least a handful of Blu-Rays along with the games. I've got 82 BDs and 10 games. It's not like the PS3 should be left off the list because it's primarily a game console... if it plays the discs - and it does, it should be included. I bought the unit because it did both things and Blu' disc sales are strong because of the PS3 so anyone omitting the unit from the count is doing so simply to lower the overall number when compared to HD-DVD player sales. Very few people with the 360 bought the add-on HD-DVD player so those who love that format who make up the lists, feel that adding the 360's addition to the number is hardly worth mentioning so by that reasoning, they also shouldn't include the PS3 and THAT is just ignorance and pure BS.

Hey, if I was an early adopter of HD-DVD, I wouldn't want to see the format die either and my prediction is this... if HD-DVD doesn't see dead sales this Christmas, the format will not die until Microsoft starts it's download service and abandons HD-DVD support. Problem is, Microsoft products and services are inherently full of glitches and bugs and between the time that they abandon support of HD-DVD and the download service is trouble free, Blu' will jump up but not as much as we all hope because all those sitting on the fence right now, will still be there waiting to see how the download service works out.

I would. When I purchased my PS3, it was to get a blu ray player. My thinking was "Why pay $500 for a stand-alone blu ray player when I can get a PS3 that also plays games?" That's why they give you 5 free blu rays and not maybe 2 free PS3 games. This was considered a player first since there really weren't any good games on the system until the past few months. Just my thinking.

Pearl, I think you misunderstood... What I meant, was that let's say Joe Blow from VideoClowns magazine does a chart. On that chart it lists HD-DVD players against BD players. Now, let's say Joe loves HD-DVD but he's not including the X-box 360 add-on piece since the numbers are so low but more importantly, he knows that if he DOES include that piece, then he also has to include the PS3 numbers - which he knows are very high. So, those numbers are not included on the list by reason of "it's a game system". That's what I mean... that the number is very conveniently lowered on purpose.

The PS2 was never included as a dvd player because hardly anyone actually bought the unit to specifically play dvd's. That was a sideline like the X-Box played dvd's as well but no one I know of bought either unit to play DVD's and games second. Neither machine was really marketed as dual purpose unlike the PS3.

Ah I see. Well I would agree with you in specialized cases as is the one you mentioned. If it were up to me, which of course, it isn't, I'd include the HD add-ons and a percentage of PS3 owners who use or have used it as a blu-ray player (through some sort of survey as I'm sure the numbers have increased since the last one). It'd be nice if both sides played fair, eh? Sadly, I doubt we could ever count on that.

I voted "a percentage of them should be included", but I'll admit... I have no idea what percentage that should be.

Regardless of whether they CAN play movies or not, not everyone will use it that way or intends to use that way. It should not count for that percentage. The people that purchase and use it for a Blu-ray player should count.

Did the ps2 count as a DVD player in stats?

I would rather be realistic and honest on both sides.

But that could have been 10% at launch, with the current marketing push it maybe upto 25%, next year it may be 50%.

But if we can't decide on a % than I say No, it should not count.

The problem is you can say yes it should count because not everyone is using it as a Blu-ray/DVD player. You can say No, because there are those, like me, that are using it as a Blu-ray Player.

I will out myself and say I am the 1 person who has said no to this point. as a fan I would like the ps3 to be counted as a player. but from a business perspective you cannot quantify the data of how many people are using them as players. I own 2 ps3s both are mainly for movies and now some sacds as well. but the fact that it is a part of the playstation family makes it by nature a gaming machine. was the ps2 counted as a dvd player? i'm not sure. if it was then yes the ps3 should be a blu ray player as well. if not then you can't no matter how much I want them to. besides. I don't think hardware sales should be counted anyway. software sales are the metrics that should be followed. you can sell as many players as you want, but if no one is buying the movies then it doesn't matter.

do I get my blu badge taken away now?
