Thumbs up Sony are really pushing BD.

Well Sony are at it again...seems to me they are the only ones Anyway Sony (Ireland) stores are offering the following:

Quote:

Start you Blu Ray collection with 6 great movies. These offers include a FREE SPIDERMAN TRILOGY and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN TRILOGY Blu Ray box set.

Just in time for Christmas!

Honestly, the war, as unpleasant as it is for most of us, is helping consumers. There's no way, when I read and heard about the first Sony Blu-ray player last December, coming in at around $1200, that this Chistmas you could--anywhere--get a machine for free, under any circumstances. Or that you could get a Blu-ray player for less than $399, with free movies and gift cards, etc.

For all of the criticism that the BDA and Sony and the Blu studios have gotten, they have been doing quite a lot in recent weeks. Even if they have avoided $98 garbage machines at Wal-Mart.

I just wish the other CEs would follow Sonys example. I recently bought an expensive Panasonic Plasma and no offer of a BD player

Right. As we've all realized, it's the HDTV first. Until people have that, Hi Def players are rather useless items. If someone is willing, or able, to afford that major purchase of the HDTV, the players ought to be part of that purchase without spending much additional funds. As others have pointed out who work for Best Buy and the like, people tend to buy players that are the same brand as the HDTV they've just purchased. (Even a coupon that gives you a couple hundred off a matching Blu-ray player would make a world of difference to any number of potential buyers. It would firmly plant the notion that if you have the HDTV, you need to have a Hi Def disk player at the same time.)

Let them buy disks with the money they've saved.

I would not be so sad. You just happen to be one of the early hobbyists in Ireland. As things start to settle down all major manufacturers will ratchet up their support. Back in 1997 I bought my first SONY SDVD player for well over 500$, shortly after prices online started falling and there were major deals to be had.

Never felt bad about it. My advice to you: enjoy your new set and invest in films you would see over and over again.
