MGM Wants HOT TUB TIME MACHINE Sequel; John Cusack May Not Return

Hot Tub Time Machine has a reputation has a flop based on a mediocre $14 million opening weekend. But the movie had legs, reaching $50 million domestic. And it is exactly the kind of R-rated comedy that finds a second life on DVD and cable reruns. Add everything up, and there is apparently enough incentive for MGM to enter into “exploratory talks” with Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke to reprise their roles for a sequel, according to Heat Vision. John Cusack, the lead in the original, is curiously not involved at this stage.

Steve Pink is also in talks to return as director. Pink would work out the story with Corddry. No details are available yet, but a hunch: The gang goes back in time to the wacky 1990s this time. There is no guarantee that a deal will come together, but if one does, production will reportedly be fast-tracked. As a fan of the cast and time travel, sounds good to me.

They have to get Cusack back. His emo poetry and snark will be needed to offset with the others. I enjoyed the first for what it was and I hope they go in a different direction and don't pull a Hangover 2.

I agree. A sequel without Cusack honestly seems pointless to me, meaning I probably won't watch. I really like that movie, it's a good flick, I'd hate to see a sequel for the sake of a sequel, especially without Cusack coming back.

I only saw the film because of him in the first place. If he isn't in it, I wouldn't make an effort to see it. It seems nowadays if anything is moderately successful they lose the main actor (Death Proof) and start making a boatload of sequels that I'm surprised there is even a market for without the original lead.

Don't really see a point of doing this without the star. I know this forum is a small sample, but I have a feeling this isn't the only group of people that will have no interest in it without him.

Also would be kind of odd if he didn't want to do it.

The wizards of smart at MGM seem bound and determined to keep the studio in the red.

This would be like making Ace Ventura 3 without Jim Carrey, can't be done.

A movie that does not need a sequel and should be left alone as is. Retarded waste of money, and a serious grab and the public for more cash. MGM needs to be smart and just stick to Hobbit and Bond until they are out of the red.

I'm not exactly the biggest Cusack fan, but he really should be in it....if it really needs to be made. The first one was fun, my fiance didn't think it was much... If anything a new cast with Chevy Chase as the consistent would be fine....

Hope they can get Cusack for at least a cameo--otherwise, it's probably a pass. Unless of course, MGM casts another '80s child star like Corey Feldman, then it's a go.

HTTM Is brilliant. This is one of the few films where I love ALL of the leading actors. Apart from Cusack, I wish the others would do more films, 'cause I don't see them enough. But Cusack can do funny so good. He needs to do it more.

I actually enjoyed HTTM, so I wouldn't mind a sequel, but Cusack and co must be in it.

Not sure the 90's are the comedy gold that the 80's are - so in a way, it's already going to be difficult to top the first one.

It wasn't a great movie by any means, but had some really fun parts re-visiting the 80's.
