Default Can LCDs be laid on their side?

I recently purchased a Sony Bravia KDL52W3000. When transporting it from Circuit City to the apartment I had to lay it down on its side in the box. It would not fix by sitting it upright in my vehicle. My question is: Does it damage an LCD by laying it down horizontally? I asked this question in AVS and only got 1 response so I am looking for some opinions/facts. Thanks!

If it's in transit in it's original packaging I can't see any problem. After all before you bought it... who knows how it was treated on the way to the store by the delivery people.

Just don't run it on it's side... LCDs usually don't like that as it defeats the cooling.

I believe it is generally considered bad idea to lay flat panel TVs on the side, as the weight of the display panel itself is held by the frame only along the edges. Plasmas are heavier than LCDs so it's supposed to be even more dangerous. There is a reason why the original shipment boxes are marked to be kept in one orientation only.

I'm assuming you already transported your LCD this way and it's working fine without any ill effects, in that case I'd breath a sigh of relief and try not to do it again. (I hope you didn't hit any potholes on your way back! )

Well....Actually it isn't working great and a new set is being sent to me Friday. I am noticing blurred motion, although subtle. My fiance thinks I am crazy but when watching SD/HD broadcast tv or even SD DVD, I notice blurry movements in a what seems like a green tinted shadow. It's hard to explain and I probably sound crazy but its pissing me off. It may also be the fact that the LCD brings out the flaws of DVD and cable. Since I am becoming more used to Blu-ray, I am expecting a lot more.

That is typical of LCD screens... look up pixel response or LCD ghosting. Basically, the quartz in the panel takes time to go from color to color which is why you get blurred motion or ghosting.

It is one of the 3 main drawbacks to LCDs compared to plasmas (the other ones are viewing angle and black level/contrast ratio).

Transporting it in it's original box while laying on its side is fine. That's exactly how I took home my parents 42" Philips LCD about 4 months ago from Best Buy. I have a 06' Hyundai Tiburon that has a huge trunk, so all I had to do was lay the box on its side and fold down the reat seats and it fit in perfectly.

Trust me doing that is not going to cause any damage to your TV.

Be sure you calibrate it too. You can remove a green cast in shadows if the TV is calibrated professionally.

The great irony of LCD. At 1080p you get great detail ... in a static image. Detail is reduced as soon as things start to move, and when the camera pans, you can wind up with less perceptible detail than a lower-res set which handles motion well (e.g. 720p plasma or 1080i CRT).

As long as you had it face down, it should be fine. I transported mine that way, too, per the instructions of the BB salespeople. I have had no trouble.

I don't disagre with what you said above regarding general LCD/plasma comparisons, but it's not relevant to the question being asked. The person is complaining about SD content and TV. Blu-rays look fine on his setup, so it has nothing to do with the capability of the panel itself.

lokus, try playing with the picture settings. Turning off noise reduction might help.

I have all of the "extra" features turned off and pretty decent picture settings. I got most of my settings from the XBR4/5 thread from AVS. Granted, SD DVD will be getting phased out from my point of view but since I have such a large collection, it sucks to have to watch an SD DVD with blurred motion. Very annoying to my eyes

So this problem won't exist with plasmas? What is the downside of going to a plasma?

A lot of museums now use LCD screens in portrait orientation for custom interactive audio-visual displays.

First off I'll say that I work for a large cable company, I'm a technician.

Since you moved to a different location then there could very well be an ingress or egress problem with your cable. Ingress and egress are problems with unwanted signals getting in or out of the "closed" system. These can be caused from tiny cuts or bends in the coax, exceeding the max bend radius. The BIGGEST culprit of ANY cable problems are the poorly installed F-Connectors. They should be the push type, not the crimp type. And the center conductor should be between 1/16 and 1/8 of an inch. The things that alter your signal are common household items or even radio stations. The signal could be too high, or too low. There are soooo many things that it could be. Any of these things could cause "ghosting". There are ways to check the signal using only your digital cable box

I also have this set and it was driven home the same way. I too notice what you are seeing in fast motion sequences. Hard to explain, but you're not crazy at all. Your settings are nearly identical to mine; however, I had recently changed to the Neutral setting and different white balance adjustments. I am using an AVS member's ISF calibration. There is actually a lot of great data on a thread relating to this TV. Some one created an Excel spreadsheet with several different ISF calibrations for this TV's big brother, the XBR4/5.

Anyway, the motion blur you are seeing is most likely to do your cables source. I am assuming you have Comcast, like me. Comcast has the worst compression issues. I am having FIOS installed on 12/12 and I can't wait. I don’t see this “blur” when watching a BluRay or playing a PS3 game….or a Wii game.
